So many? hmm really... I think in this case 'so many' is the usual urban / internet myth.

Maybe, just maybe, they were not being so attentive as they claim they were so as to not notice the change in speed limit, or they were either not aware of it at all, or maybe deliberate speeding.. pick which reason for being prosecuted yourself? Now you can justify all the above as much as you like but if you make a mistake or break the law intentionally then there are consequences.

The thirty limit marker is the start of the limit not the place you start slowing down.

Anyway as I said before I'm not trying to change any opinion here, we just disagree :-)

I don't know, its a subject that always creates polarised views and almost everyone thinks theirs is right. My view is worth _exactly_ the same as everyone else's, which is actually not much...

What I know as facts are that policemen don't hide in bushes itching to catch people driving 2mph over the limit. I know that reducing the speed limit on the M60 from 70mph to 50mph improved my 22 mile rush hour commute from 2 hours to just over 1 hour. I know that living very close to a ban on points isn't fun. I know that after being taught to safely drive very fast on public roads it was better to make a conscious decision to drive a bit slower...

Others can have different views without it upsetting me :-)

Well they usually say it's an accident black spot so they've put up a camera to make it safer. There was the story a few years back where a new bypass had a camera on it from day one, so obviously they must have designed and built an accident black spot into the road.

If they really wanted the public support for the use of speed cameras then they would abolish the fine and you just get points. Then it really would only be about road safety, but Na lets just screw the motorist for some more money.

No myth, I know two people - one who was at the time a minicab driver and quite good behind the wheel - who were done at 2mph over the limit right at the sign into the 30 limit by police who were's very visible. And this was from a 50 or 60 limit, and I recall the minicab one was after going round a bend so unless you knew the road it's necessary to brake moderately hard to be at 30 by the time your bumper levels the sign.

Nearly always a SLOW painted on the road if the speed reduction is just round a bend. As said above a bend = slow down anyway. Speed limits are just that limits not targets or minimums.

Same with the Bath Eastern Bypass. Built as a duel carriage way, from the start. But due to "NIMBY" protests it went over budget and was late.

Speeding is a subject what can and will divide opinions.
Yes, you do get speed enforcing people hiding.
Yes, you get people claiming to be doing 2mph over the limit.
Yes, you will get daft speed limits.

There's a difference between can come to an emergency stop by standing on the brakes giving time to stop should something occur as you go round a bend and coming rounds a bend to see you need to be going slower for a sign, which should not require severe braking in order to comply - and in doing so causes an increased risk of a car behind running into you for an unexpected and unnecessary obstruction.

Yes, there's usually two sides to see, but I don't see how it can be said that the police do not lie in wait for people travelling at 2mph over the limit when they clearly do.

I had an interesting speeding event a few years back, there is a section of double lane road that climbs a long gradient, there is often a speed camera operating near the top and I travel this road a lot and know about it.

Whilst on the road I was passed by a Subaru which totally howled past at I guess well in excess of 100mph, a week later I got a ticket for doing 78mph, there is no way I was breaking the limit...not even by 1mph never mind nearly 20mph over the limit.

I was daft and paid because I thought I would have wasted a day and paid even more with court costs if I challenged it, I still regret that decision.

If that's the bit I think it is (A66 just near Keswick) I was nicked there myself in the Connect about ten years ago... overtaking a line of caravans I was doing about 80 as I spotted the camera van; got on the brakes but not too hard as I had a Sierra up my chuff who'd probably have hit me if I'd braked hard (his problem for being too close I know but one instinctively doesn't want to cause a crash)... they nicked me for 72 in a 50. It's single-carriageway with a crawler lane so technically I could only go as fast as the caravans anyway, stupid as that is.

So in theory if we all stick to the limits for a year or two they'll lose all that revenue and having the cameras will start to cost them money, so they'll remove them...

Yeah that's the bit, I was laughing at the Subaru and actually said to the wife there's somebody who does not know about the camera and lo and behold I got done, no idea how or why but suspect the stupid speed the Subaru was doing somehow caused a false reading on my car.

I got zapped by these too, just got a warning letter through some days later, was a group of three or four all in high viz as you say.

yeah ive said that to the mrs .....old matey from the pub comes swerving up the road , thats okays its old matey , young lad with the raspy exhuast lets get him and so on

if i get caught fair n square by the coppers so be it , not very keen at all on some busy bodies having the power to get folk in trouble

They even took it upon themselves to walk round the town reporting:

I realise I'm in a massive minority of probably 1 but I don't really care.

They have them in our village, as far as I know they have no power to prosecute but people will get a warning letter if their found speeding. I guess the alternative is police presence and 3 points and a fine?

Having had a passenger in a wannabe rally drivers Subaru hospitalised and a wall demolished last week, narrowly missing a couple of friends of ours who were driving in the opposite direction then fair enough. I've been done for straying over a 30 limit, as I'm sure most people have, and have no particular fondness for police speed traps that are just out to make money, but I can understand why people have enough of idiot drivers screaming through their towns and villages.
