! If you weren’t such a fantastic welder, I’d say you need your eyes checked. 
I have another set of coupons ready for tomorrow, I forgot how time consuming it is to prep a set of pipe coupons! This first set I didn’t take all the highs and lows out, but the 2nd set looks like it will be a better fit. I’ll tack them up in the morning and try it again. This time I might try some 3/32-inch 7018 to see if I can handle it better coming around the “bastard” positions. Do you guys in the UK use that term for the positions from 5 0-clock to 3 0-clock, and 7 0-clock to 9 0-clock? That term is used here. My 7018 is at least 5-years old, but I did turn the rod oven on and got it up to temperature before using.

no puddles thats another new one,again speaks volumes.you know as well as i do your skill level,its high.i suppose i should go into more detail of each run,but i really only planned on flat for this thread heres a couple,brought out tig ,f/j.
heres a couple,brought out tig ,f/j.I guess the term is used because there is no name for the position. It’s not really overhead or vertical.
I don’t have any projects going at the moment, so the timing is perfect for me to sharpen my pipe welding skills, (not that I ever was much of a pipe welder) but sure wanted to be one at one time!
In the first picture it looks like you were running down hill, (top to bottom) is it Tig also?
Do you work in a pipe fab shop?
Do you ever go out in the field?

puddles my time this last year or so, has been say 2/3 on site ,1/3 shop. the shop would be my preference. snowy i do quite a bit of tig,mostly in the shop,but now and then tig is required on site also. john im glad you are enjoying this thread,i really hope it is helping,the first cap here belongs with the last tig filler 6 ins.ill explain a cap in a different thread and possibly the other runs if i find the pics f/j

I did another coupon today, little better on the root, (more constantly). But having a hard time with making the cap come out uniformly! Switched brands, and a freshly opened can of 7018 made a difference! Maybe tomorrow I’ll replace my cheater lens with reading glasses, just can’t get the hang of this going blind in my old age!

I think geting the keyholes tidy will be my major stumbleing block (one of em anyway)
It has made me think about geting the remote out but think that could just complicate matters one step further, Iv got some nice fresh 6010 fleetwelds ready for the root...maybe tommorow ehhhHad a little better luck with the cap today. But just crucified the root. Had better luck with the overhead than with the flat, what’s with that?

I had a stab at this Il get some pictures tommorow, but cheeted by rooting with the TIG, a 5/32 root gap, youve got to be F**** jokein I found with the Tig I could lay the filler in the root then push it in the pool from the underside, think with a bit of practice and the right ceramic I could walk the cup round the pipe and get a perfect root, the cap tho is looking messy im just not tight enouth on the sweeps, finding it really hard to change the arc face as I come round the pipe to land, grrrrr

Did you purge the pipe? What little Tig open root pipe welding I’ve done, (stainless steel) I preferred running over the filler rod, more so that dipping. I was taught to walk the cup, but know lots of welders who are not allowed to ever touch the cup to the base metal!

I would of purged if it was more than a muck about, but couldnt be bothered for a practice
TBH there was little sign of poor sheilding think the gas lens helps, tho an xray would proberbly show something diffrent. I found running over the filler and feeding under the pool to be far the best way, It seemed to keep the pool much more controled, would proberbly be better still with the small 180amp torch on the machine but again too lazy to change so the 400 heavy weight was on there I nearly always run on the filler on LCMs, and dip with al. puting the machine into a pulse always helps with the dip just gives you that bit more time with the pool, much more controled than pulling off the footpedal.TBH looking at the pictures on this thread my cap was always gona be rubbish, My prep was too wide, so it left me with a huge fill to do, oh well I guess you learn from your mistakes

Very interested to see that the pipes on here were welded with 6013. As has been mentioned already, lots of my american friends look down their nose at it as purely a 'pretty' farmers rod.
I've got some 3 inch sched40 stainless pipe and I'll try some tig coupons this weekend and post them up for you all to laugh at :P
I must try and learn to walk the cup, would be a really good skill to have. Can enyone point me to a tutorial and/or recommend ceramic sizes for a wp20 torch?
