Your find it lots easier with a gas lens, Unless your buggering about with open roots... the big fat cup gives you something to roll on the work tho the ceramics are much more brittle than a standard and tend to crack if you over heat them round the base of the cup..... On my small torch a 6 or 7.... will normaly do most things......
Oh and Im sure you know this, that stainless will certainly need a good purge

well these are the pics from yesterdays attempt, jeuss... the root was'nt too bad, think with a couple more runs to get used to the positioning of the filler and the torch I could get that tidy, but that cap, trying to keep the arc length corect whilst runing up the face that's something else, Im a lazy 2 position welder vert up, or flat, never having to change the face of the rod as I move along the weld, christ thats so much harder than I imagined hats off to you F/J..
Puddles Im sure you said the flat was the hardest, same here, comeing up to the 12 position..I seamed to get arc wander and danger of slag inclustion as the work wanted to get ahead of the arc (if that makes scence)
Its gona take a good few attempts yet to get anyware near a half decent job.....
I think a few bits of scrap pipe are gona have to come to our little forum shindig...Its certainly a good one to have a stab at

Hi all, I'm fairly tidy with MMA in all positions (not f/j standard!), not too bad with TIG on the bench but positional TIG on pipe, ugh!
Currently doing an evening class for 6g TIG and struggling - eyes aren't what they used to be but I think that's an easy excuse, unfortunately my tutor is no expert TIG hand and is not familiar with 'walking the cup'. I've not seen a good hand TIG pipe welder in the field, only pics and videos. If I do manage to improve enough not to look a complete pr*t I might raid the piggy bank and visit the Welding Institute for some expert tuition. W/A

It may be an excuse, but it’s the best one I can come up with

I’m just bewildered as to why I have so much trouble with the flat sections when running the root! The overhead, (bottom) runs so much easier!
The link is just to show one of these pancake shields. Suppose to cut down on the glare from behind, and fogging of the lenses. It has cutting goggles made out of balsa wood. First time I ever seen one with a flip front.

Wasn't having a dig at you about eyesight - merely trying to come to terms with my own ineptitude! I have a cheater lens in my TIG screen, which is beneficial on the bench at a constant focal length, but I struggle generally with positional TIG. Seems to be more of a co-ordination and steadying problem with torch and filler. I know where everything should be - its a question of actually getting it in the right place at the right time! W/A

OH NO! I didn’t take it as a dig at all!
But I’m having a hard time coming to grips with these eyes getting old, (and body)!
I never have been very good with pipe welding. Never had the opportunity to get a steady diet of it! Each coupon I can see improvements, and starting to get a feel for it. No telling how long it will take before it gets to be easy / comfortable / second nature!
As most pipe welders will tell you; open root pipe separates the men from the boys!

puddles you are too hard on your ability that root is great,and the cap.if you think you are over pen on top go down 5 10 amps,my recommendation would be keep the amps as is and burn the v slightly higher,my approach is stay dead center burn the edges up back left right, but just watch what the keyhole is doing.puddles this is only talk on my part i dont have a good 5g root shot,and when i get one it will be no better than yoursi said you should work at this. id just climb the v with 10.

one of us is wrong puddles,i thought 2.5 was 3/32 1/8 3.25, anyhow thats what ive been using.

How come you are a fan of 6013's FJ? Not a rod normally favoured by pipewelders, especially for positionals....

i really have no answer to that paul,perhaps the shipyards when i was a lad.i suppose im not a pipewelder,rather a pipefitter who welds a lot f/j
