Emery cloth on a 20m lathe?

20m lathe didn't necessarily have a 20m long component in it.

I saw a Turkish guy on Youtube a couple of weeks ago on a huge lathe with a very big diameter part in the chuck.
At one point he was standing on the bed reaching inside a very big bore polishing with emery. This thing was turning very slow just because of the big diameter, but if something goes wrong it will just eat you and spit you out.


I use emery quite frequently, but always lightly held between the fingers.
I also use a flat file a lot. I'm right handed, but it comes natural to use a file left handed on a lathe so I don't lean over the chuck.
My small Southbend isn't very strong and too much resistance will stop the chuck and the belt will slip, but if I don't pay attention to what I'm doing it will still rip my fingers of or at least break some.

Every lathe accident I hear of involves something like this. The chap MUST have known the risk - you don't let some apprentice loose on a lathe that size!

A very tragic accident but how will fining the company £750,000 help? Insurance doesnt pay out in these cases. Thsi fine does NOT go to the families but to the government The payout USED to be based on profit. Now it is turnover. Given how many businesses are struggling a fine like that can easily sink a business. Then you have staff out of work - suppliers let down. That in itself can trigger all sorts of problems for other people including possible suicides.

Does that mean a 20m long lathe will have to become fully enclosed? Fine on a CNC but what about a manual machine?

Another comment "Ensure personal protective equipment (PPE) worn by workers did not create risk of being injured by, or drawn into, the lathe"
We all know this - but in a freezing cold warehouse in Winter short sleeves and no gloves may not be an option

On a personal note I have only used emery cloth 5 or 6 times - and I hate doing it. I now use my B+D finger file instead. Suffering from Raynauds I often have to wear gloves - and my warehouse is like a fridge. Ironically experience actually breeds contempt. A new trainee is likely to be far more terrified of a lathe than an experienced operator.

We seem to be starting from new low levels of competence in all areas if we need signs like this:

..... I have to try to mitigate against all the clowns who know better in the factories around the world it will get installed in, where they will ignore procedure, won't use the correct additions but instead use random woods, old lifting straps and God knows what else . . .

I worked for a company that built paint booth systems for the automotive industry, they got an order from a company in India to supply and deliver only, they would do their own installation, comissioning etc.
The company had one of their engineers out there on a different project so he popped in to see how they were getting on, he found they had only connected the very minimum to get it working, other systems such as fire suppression etc. had just been ignored.

That made me cringe that did!

I find it's the "quick jobs" where you get hurt: the jobs where you pop over to the lathe to skim a few thou off a troublesome pin, or reach for a grinder to touch up a dull blade, or grab a chainsaw to free a trapped branch, or climb under an implement supported only by hydraulics, etc., etc., etc. It is difficult to maintain one's usual discipline when "it'll only take me a minute".

Id agree, but takes less than a minute to go wrong!

But that's the problem with HSE.
If your risk assessment doesn't state the bleeding obvious and something goes wrong you get fined for it!
And the fines are now out of all proportion. USED to be based on PROFIT - now on TURNOVER!
Logistics often operates on only 3% to 5% margins - software can go as high as 95% margins.

The massive fines based on turnover can often be the end of many businesses - large or small. The fine will NOT bring the dead person back - probably won't guarantee no more deaths - and could well put many people and suppliers out of work. The personal ramifications of that can have dramatic knock on effects. People losing their livelihoods - their homes - possibly even drive them to suicide. And I am not on about the "fat cat evil bosses" but the humble workers as well.

OSHA is the same way on this.
No gloves near rotating elements (IIRC 3' minimum) Period.

I will suggest to comply, you can apply gloves when the spindle is off, for loading
and unloading, pulling chips, etc.

Much like you can't put your hands into a punch press, until the machine has stopped.

Radial arm drills can be very dangerous, Most places have banned them, there was a phase of fitting cats whisker limit switches with dc injection but it made them unusable because the swarf would hit and trigger them.

One huge point worth remembering.
75% of all preventable deaths occur at home - so may I suggest suitable PPE - quite cheap
