Deville workshop heater valve

Recently brought a Deville oil heater that was secondhand and I think perhaps 'got at' .

I have managed to get the instructions for it in French and translated them into English (Google not me!) but it has no component information. The origianl problem was very little fuel flow so removing and cleaning the brass 'jet' from sticky gunk resolved the flow issue.

However the next issue I have is that the float valve does not stop the reservoir filling and it only stops when the valve is tripped by the second float. I have had a look on-line and could only find info on other makes and wonder if anyone has seen this valve or got a component diagram of it?

The problem is that the valve does not seat fully when the float is at its desired set point being a couple of mm off its seat so fuel keeps passing through until the second float trips the overflow and forces the valve into its seat. I was wondering if something is missing from the valve such as a rubber seal etc?

These are also fitted to AGAs so try looking for some of their instruction manuals as well.

How high is the oil tank supplying the oil to the valve? If it’s too high it can overwhelm the float on these Toby valves.

The tank is mounted on its own stand fixed to the rear of the heater so its factory set.

I agree for the short time I have run it that it gives of considerable heat.

However my second attempt after initially cleaning the jet and reassemble without checking the float was interesting to say the least!!

Too much fuel that eventually ignites and then turns to vapour makes an interesting full on mini jet engine! It kept going for nigh on 15 minutes with all the fuel turned off. Brought back distant memories of fire training and the difficulty of extinguishing an oil fire...........

Start the thing on no more than Mark 1.
Run at that for twelve minutes, then shut the excess fuel pull-out rod.
You may need to hold the door open for about five minutes ,very slightly, using the priming spoon handle stem nipped at the outer edge of the door.
A preliminary ten second prime on the Toby latch prior to actually chucking in the lighted meths works for me.
Overfuelling at startup is a sure route to pure fear......

The setting I started with was from a couple of youtube videos I saw which stated setting 3 which originally was not an issue and only the lower part of the ring vaporised with blue flame. Turning the setting knob to 6 after made no difference. After cleaning the jet though it solved the low output issue, perhaps a bit too much and I will try setting 1 next time as you suggest to avoid the adrenalin rush.....
