Today I acquired...........

Not quite aquired, but found a set of Ford Pinto main bearing caps in my workshop. Now, I knew I had two blocks - a standard bore low miles Cortina block, and a 205 Sierra block - both have their caps on. So that means that I have, or at least had another block in there... Means I need to do some clambering around to find it. I also found a pair of 2litre heads and 4, 2litre cranks. Also have an American 2.3 pinto without the turbo head.
It's been a while since I did anything with the Ford pinto, can you tell?

Oh that's the biggest displacement F.I.R.E. engine essentially the same exact engine on my little Punto but with 200 extra CC .
Strange it's only 78hp because that's the standard power for the 1.2 16V, yours should be 100Hp, the same engine on the Panda 100HP, I don't know if you ever seen one but essentially a panda with a Golf 6 looking bumper.
I'd put a 4-2-1 runner then straight pipe all the way till the muffler and then put an emptied muffler.
It'll be more than happy, problem with cat is that there's really not a perfect spot to put it if not were it's originally placed, and it's practically like having a stove in between the engine and the radiator.
You might want to put the cat inside the muffler itself so it's well shielded from everything else reducing the heat transfered to nearby components.
On exhaust path you'll find everything and I mean everything, brake an fuel lines, gearbox cords and shifter mechanism, and none the less the fuel tank.
Anyways if you accomplish that you'll be more than happy because it'll sound great.
My little Punto has the original stock exhaust and after 25 years the cat kinda gave up.
It has an hole nearby the last curve before the muffler and it sounds awesome for what it is.
It pops, occasionally bangs with included flame spits beneath the car.
But it'll sound even better if you managed to put individual throttle bodies maybe from a bike since you still have to do a map.
Main problem here is that most sensors are placed into the throttle body

My understanding is that this engine is artificially limited as learners in Italy are only allowed to have 78hp? There is also a six-speed 95hp FIRE version which might have been downgraded to make this one.

The cat I think will unfortunately have to stay as close to the engine as possible, I've heard tell of high-flow cats failing MOT if they aren't running hot enough.

The stock exhaust is stock cat, then straight pipe all the way to the rear muffler, so I'm pretty much going to do the same again but with high-flow cat and straight-through muffler. Should hopefully sound really nice without being an obnoxious boy racer sound.

A friend of mine is doing the Fire Alarm service at a local collage.
I know the system, he asked for some advice, so i nip over.
They had skips, I asked if I could take a peek.

When I've took my license in 2020 the limit was 55kW/T and maximum power output of 95HP.
Things have changed since due to electric and hybrid vehicle Wich essentially obliterate those limits.

Get some heat bandages and insulate it as well as possible then .
Cause it will make an huge difference, they have engineering flaws since they born, they used to have carburetors on them and they are designed for them.
The 1000cc engine it's capable of 70Hp at 7500RPMs bone stock.
They limited it
Back to their flaws once they applied EFI and cat they started to suffer overheating.
High flow cat would help little bit as long as you insulate it avoiding it to transfer heat to the engine block or the radiator

Don't worry it will sound like F1 car passed over 3000RPMs and the engine would change completely after that regime too.
Those are very lean running engines, they are kinda lazy till 2000 RPMs than they start to unchain themselves but after the 3000RPMs they rev up very very quickly.

I think I have maybe 6 gti engines, all of them were running when removed. One needs a bottom end overhaul after spinning a big end bearing.
All of them are complete plus I have some MI16 spare bits.

Boring head is a seriously nice find. Looks like a 50 taper so possibly not too useful to most hobbyist, but I believe the shank is replaceable on some models.

Unfortunately that look like the non replaceable shank, but I'd need to see it from the top to confirm

I have a complete in bits mi16 engine, the liners don’t want to come out - bad sign…

Acquired a new toy....next week we shall see if it can core a 140mm ish hole in a brick wall.

After the 127mm soil pipe took several hours with my DeWalt SDS I decided I needed to go all in. Could have hired one...but I find hired tools are either brand new or something you'd find in a skip!
