Well Mum nipped over to act as counter balance and we got the chassis out into the open fairly pain free and with some of the steel acquired for the cherry picker repairs it was slotted through the bush holes. Quick blast over with some sand paper to scuff it up and another hour later another dollop of primer is on.

See how this turns out once it goes off and I may go to the Jotamastic later.

@addjunkie that is most definitely the plan. I wanted to get the outside painted and protected before I start spraying oily stuff inside it.

There may well be an episode of hoisting it up with the JCB and shaking it about to get all the stuff down one end coupled with an airline at the other and Charles down the bottom.

Well after a cluster of duck ups it's got the Jotamastic coat on.



Did a quick tidy in the workshop so I wasn't tripping over stuff going to the sink (bloody handy to have one I don't care about getting dirty).

Next task was to reassemble the spray gun. Mixed up some paint with base, hardener and thinner. Poured it into the hopper and went out to my test board, bugger carp spray, feels like something is jamming. Tipped the gun upside down and took the hopper off, dismantled and there's a couple of little bits of epoxy blocking the nozzle. Scraped those out and reassembled the gun and started spraying. At least it's spraying but it's now dribbling out of the end when I release the trigger

Ah well keep calm and soldier on. Finished that spray pot and then decided to have a look at the dribble. Oops, no spring on the plunger - I definitely saw that this morning. ******** it I could find it though so managed to find a suitable one pilfering it from my automatic wiring cutter project.

Coat number 2, 4, 6 or 8. I seem to be incapable of judging how much to mix up so despite the pots saying 600ml on the scale and my spray gun having a 600ml mark on it one pot does 1.5 guns. I also seem to be incapable of not mixing a full pot so it results in lots of coats. The saving grace is it's a long and fiddly chassis so by the time I've got to one end I can start again.

So only two batches of painting but many many coats.



Tomorrow the top coat and that's painting done. I'll sort out the axles and give it a good period to go off properly (says 2 days on the can for full offness).

Hell at this point the axles should probably be painted too...

Some axles have been relocated and all springs removed



And some axle stands employed

Issues to sort are

• Swivel housings are weeping slightly
• Flexi brake lines all need replacing
• Free wheeling hub on middle axle weeping
• Damper bushes
• Spring bushes
• Front axle brakes on drivers side are sticky (they were at the last MOT). It's got dual 1 tonne wheel cylinders on the front.

Aside from that if I have time to clean them up and paint them I might.

Are you sticking with drums all round? Not that familiar with Series Landies but I thought there was a disc conversion available for the front.

Yes, never had an issue with them when I did have it on the road. The front actually has dual 1 tonne brakes on it so they're significantly bigger and doubled up (pistons).

When I MOTd it several years back now I had a leak from the middle axle which a local garage and I sorted prior to the MOT. Took it for the MOT and failed on braking efficiency, doh... Forgot being drums they needed adjusting. Adjusted them, fixed a few other minor issues (I was mainly concerned with the smoking engine passing which it did with flying colours ). Took it back for the retest and the tester checked the electrical issues (a connector in the dash had fallen off). He put the Tapley tester in the foot well set off down the industrial estate. When he got out of the truck he was rubbing his forehead.

"You definitely sorted the brakes, I was expecting normal LR brakes, I hit the windscreen". That explains the rubbing of his head then...

Bear in mind also that according to the factory brochure that despite being a triple axle vehicle it's kerb weight is only 1.6t. I weighed it at I guess close to 2t with the old diesel lump in there.

At the last moment I have to handle them so I don't get covered in them. The needle gun has freed them up massively by shaking all the crap and rust out from in between them.

Theyre actually in pretty good shape, most of it was just dirt on the outside I think.

Late series brakes are very, very good, the only issue is repeated braking down hills. And, of course you should use engine braking for that.
