Some upcoming towing duties means I actually need to sort out a socket on the rear. Thankfully fairly easy with the junction box and a damn sight easier without the bed on. I found a new and improved way to sling it making it easier to lift off.



Prior to going to Scotland I did get in a selection of parts (bearings, brake shoes, stub axle) to overhaul the important bits so will try and sort out the middle stub axle which is now properly peeing out EP90.

And a teaser for some stuff to come...

It just makes access to the junction box for the trailer socket easier...



And socket added.



Then well I got distracted and **** really started hitting the fan. I dropped the stub axle off the really leaky wheel and found a lot of glitter, a LOT.



Then after confirming we could probably survive on one car for a week I got distracted... Through drive rear flange off.





Then all the rear props disconnected drastic things happened.







The source of the glitter has been found... One bearing is completely collapsed and the crown wheel has been touching the casing a bit.

@Hybrid_From_Hell expect a phone call tomorrow

. In the short term @Chris Davies reckons he has some 3.54 10 spline diffs so plan is to plug the through drive hole and whack in another diff as a short term measure then I can overhaul the 6x6 drive unit at a more leisurely pace.

@Wytze actually just for an under tray storage box to replace the 90x90 box that acts as a packer at the front of the bed.

Re your axle seepage /leakage .. do you have axle breathers on the top of the axle tubes ,if so check they are clean and working . Numerous times Ii found leaks were caused by pressure in the axle tube due to the breathers being chock a block with fine hard dried mud & rust .

Sealing surface on the stub axle where the hub seal runs is damaged.

Well a quick visit to @Chris Davies today saw an exchange of Land Rover bits with a spare power steering unit swapped for a 10 spline diff. Cursory checks such as there wasn't any detectable play in bearings, it was the right ratio and it was a 10 spline job done. Set off home. Then realised there's no fill plug on this Defender I presume diff and there isn't one on the axle casing. A quick comparison of appropriate fill levels showed it looks to be possible to drill and tap the diff casing for a fill port.

Quick check and yes it fits.



The original prop looks too short but I found another one on the shelf. No idea where from, maybe a P38 rear or possibly the old 110 one from when it has a Salisbury. Annoyingly it's a little too long but I have a lathe and a welder and I'm not afraid to use them... Although the bore of the M300 isn't big enough for the prop so I'll have a think about that.

Then some parts identification started. The seal had marked NTK 1077 237 175 37 which turned up some hits on Google which looked light the right measurements so I popped the seal out and confirmed and ordered one.



Then magically the bearing also has some markings on it which turned up trumps again Nadella 4716 with a custom spacer on the inside. So one was also duly ordered given the amount of glitter around it.



Then poop started hitting the fan again two of the nuts I spun onto the handbrake drum now won't come off as the "captive" bolts are no longer captive so they'll have to be destructively removed in all liklihood and output flange removed to replace.
