Must admit Bims look nice without all the bodywork. Personally would prefer a Nico Bakker though.

1976 GT550 in today for an odd fault.
Customer had bought it with a fully documented engine rebuild and popped in a while back asking if we would work on 2 stroke engines, yes we do!.
He explained he'd been riding and suddenly lost connection between engine and back wheel, no drive. Stopped and restarted and clutch started working again. While it in fault mode the clutch leaver had excessive play.
Felt fine on the bench but tool it all apart to check clutch plates etc.
Found clutch centre hub loose and centre nut loose, odd as it had the securing washer staked over..
Found the securing washer was wrong size, span on splines and was basically useless (hub nut couldn't have been tightend adequately either).
Glad to find an actual fault ,and correct lock washer fitted and nut torqued to 40ftlb.
It's also leaking like a sieve so hopefully not an engine out job for that..

I was looking at the crankcase halves split mulling over what sealant they had used..
As you say doesn't bode well that they can't fit a correct lock washer.
I seem to be a magnet for other people's failed projects lol.

The snag with this is by the time they get to me, they are out of money. AND as suspicious as hell of anything you do or try to do to help them. It is very disheartening.
I used to have a 380 GT Ram Air. Quite possibly the worst handling bike in the history of motorbikes.
A YDS7 with rd250 engine but still with drum brake at the front and expansion chambers the lot I owned briefly wants a word about that worst handling award but for different reasons. You had 4 good stops coming down a twisty downhill lane then the impressive looking TLS front brake would fade away suddenly to nothing and you'd have to try to get round the next few corners too fast with spongy suspension and a flexy frame while riding something with the powerband of a razor trying to feather the throttle to bring the power back in once you survived past the apex. We wont mention the wheelie or stall clutch it had. Probably both fixable but someone else wanted it more and was prepared to pay me for it and I bought a GS750 with the ill gotten gains. I like exciting bikes, but not that exciting.
On the GT, not really failed, just some snags to fix. It might have been a total basket case ten years ago and someone brought it back together into a semi viable bike but right at the end of something its a massive slog to just get those last few bits boxed off and people make mistakes or loose enthusiasm there a lot. Just needs someone to push it that last mile into being perfect!

Why do you take on that type of work? Usually, those'd be the jobs to turn away. I know we all like a challenge, but they're usually not good when running a business.

Total I made a quick and dirty fix to a quad bike exhaust (I think)
The pipe broke inside the flange.
Tricky to get access but I did manage to tig some 316 pigeon poo over the crack.
I ground the lumps off and then was able to install a short piece of pipe to reinforce the repair.
The pipe was a good fit in the pipe but I needed to flare it to get a better fit at the flange end.
Welded the, probably, 0.6mm pipe to the flange, which did not go well, but at least it's stuck.
Then made a couple of cuts to weld the reinforcing pipe to the exhaust pipe
And then welded the exhaust pipe to the reinforcing pipe.
Not pretty and I should have drilled holes and plug welded it, but we will see how it lasts.
At least it's better than it was.

Update, well it works perhaps a little too wellWell the 3d printed replacement parts fit nicely after a little sanding, all back together and appears to be working just need to borrow friends 110.

so whilst awaiting parts from japan to arrive, hopefully should be here at the end of next week, i've been doing the job it originally was on its way to me for. r3's are not immune to the old rust bug.
this isn't too bad, mostly surface rust. there are a few holes though, which got cut out and replaced with good metal.
driver side rear wheel arch

drivers side front wheel arch
all welded up and treated to prevent future issues.
next job is to prime, paint black and cover in dinitrol 4941 as a stone chip and underseal protection.
someone in the past waxoyled the rear subframe, it was very corroded underneath in all the usual areas. proper treatment will retard that nicely. would be nice to pull the subframe, shot blast and paint it, but its not in the budget.

Fairlead rollers de-rusted, de-burred, and greased with moly grease, and the knackered, kinked, rusting wire rope replaced with a good quality Dynema rope of the equivalent load rating.
No more do I need to question "will some old strops and a leather jacket wrapped round the cable be enough to stop me getting cut in half" whilst winching.
And I finally got round to applying filler to last summer's "quick and dirty" body repairs.
Even unpainted it's a big improvement.

I fixed a perfectly straight gate into a bent one 
Put it up yesterday so the tractor and JCB can get into our little wood and then promptly reversed the JCB into the end of it. On the plus side my gate post is solid, it didn't shift...
Just to clarify the gate was open when I reversed into it rather than backing into the middle of it so quite a neat bend in that respect.
