I know humans who use them to keep the heat in over night.
They slow burn.

This is my chosen when not burning wood logs...20 lumps last all night and still hot in the morning.

Was not impressed with those pressed wooden briquettes 2 years ago and not used since.

No wondering whether they may be a bit damp or not, consistent size/shape, (so they'd be easier to store), easy to break, (mine's only a small stove), quite easy to start, decent heat, reasonable burn time, don't leave silly amounts of ash etc.

I'm not suggesting there's any night & day type difference between these & logs, but they just make things easier.

They're fairly pricey but they do burn very hot.
I bought some boxes of Ecofire HotRods from a forum member and was really impressed with them, though now I've got a regular supply of reasonably priced hardwood logs I burn those instead.

Hardwood logs are a game changer compared to softwood, burnt hard all last winter but could only get soft this year at my permitted costs...going through it twice as fast hence my switch to coal for a while.

You definitely get through softwood a hell of a lot faster, and the difference in heat output is so noticeable.

Hardwood logs are a game changer compared to softwood, burnt hard all last winter but could only get soft this year at my permitted costs...going through it twice as fast hence my switch to coal for a while.

There's a few reasons why I'm considering these. Seasoned/kiln dried hardwood logs aren't cheap either, so swings & roundabouts, I then have store them somewhere, (which means picking a spot which both the landlord & other residents find acceptable), then I may likely end up cutting them in half so they'll fit in the firebox.

These, they're packaged, so can stash them here, there & everywhere, out of the way. I can easily halve them in length, wouldn't have insects & rats classing them as a playground, (my current place for storing logs is in the wood), & they're decent burners.

I'm merely wondering if certain brands are better than others.

I'm not using the stove as my primary heat source, so keeping it in all night isn't necessity.

Coal, I'd prefer not to use. No specific reason. Merely wish to stick with wood.

I'm leaning towards trying those from the Driffield place.

Not tried them yet, but I'll probably test one or two later tonight, to see what they're like.

Duffield, not Driffield. They turned up today. Good size briquettes. Approx. 12" long & 3" diameter. Solid too, instead of having that core hole which a lot have.

Not tried them yet, but I'll probably test one or two later tonight, to see what they're like.

How does the cost compare to logs?

That's what I'm doing. Need to break them down in size for general burning anyhow. Only a small firebox on this stove.

I've no idea. I've merely gone for convenience, with these. Much easier for me to store, being in consistently sized packs of 6, guaranteed low moisture level, & if they need chopping to length for the firebox, (which they do), a sharp rap from the hatchet breaks them. No sawing, as would be the case with logs.

I gave them a go this morning. One log lasts approx. a couple of hour, with both air controls set around half way.

They're not cheap, but neither are kiln dried logs. Lesser of two evils.

3m cube of wood over here has gone from €240 to €340 since last year, and it's not that dry frankly. I'm burning fallen pine from the garden.

January storms took down 20 odd dead trees.

Not the best, but it's free.

That's it. Any wood I have here for splitting is relatively fresh, & there's no real guarantee when you order in logs as to exactly what you'll get. At least with extruded briquettes, you know there'll be reasonable consistency.

It's just a gamble when you order the first load. You're stuck with a load if they're crap. Same situation with logs though.

As you can see, just one of those briquettes fills a decent portion of that firebox.
