2004 Diesel Freelander, yay or nay ?

So I'm collecting it tomorrow, hired a 3.5t van with ramps and winch on the back, rated at 1350kgs, Freelander weighs 1550, so marginally overweight, but I can't see that being an issue, going to drop it off at the works workshop, as there's the local, bored, retired, incredibly knowledgable, ex village mechanic / garage owner, who is frankly on a par with the knowledge base on this forum, dunno if he knows auto Freelanders though ?

Pics tomorrow unless what I'm told doesn't correspond to what I'm going to get, it's costing me purchase price just to go fetch it.

So, I'll be ranting if the blokes telling fibs.

Post up here with any issues. Theres lots of experience - even though I hated mine I might have some useful tips too... :-)

So, I've just been watching some YouTube reviews, if it's 2004, it's a TD4, BMW engine, timing chain, with none of the other issues associated with the other engines, 2 litre 109 or some such horsies, and apparently it's not unusual to lose the clutch at 100k miles, which surprised me.

One thing to watch on the TD4 is the crankcase breather filter, I think it collapses and blocks, but there's plenty of modification kits out there.

Yep, crankcase breather will get changed along with a complete service.

Detuned, cheap version of the BMW engine. Lucky for you no clutch in a Jatco auto...
Rear window drops when closing the hatch, sometimes never come up...
I would have the V6 facelift, ditch the 4wd nonsense, stick a turbo under there...

I quite like my 300 HP when I want to make a quick getaway at the lights, etc.

Automatic.....no clutch just a torque convertor between engine and auto box.

Anyway, I drove 200kms met two brothers who were english, really nice guys, they didn't have a suitable battery, started first time, little bit of white smoke, it hadn't run for over three months, and it's damp over here, loaded, checked for rust, one tiny bit I spotted. Front bonnet had a nasty spray paint job, rear window goes up and down, all doors open and close. Had a full service, two front tyres, drove home to works workshop, unloaded it. Was in a hurry to take hire vehicle back, forgot to take photos, Doh !

So where do I start the diagnosis ? Please.

1st thing is check gearbox fluid...brown and smelly not good, still red better. get yourself a good diagnostic pad and start pressing buttons

I've got one of those basic OBD boxes, which talks to your phone ?

Any use ? I've never had much success with it frankly.

There's something called an IRD, sits on the side of the gearbox - on the manual cars this houses the diff if I recall? As well as the bevel gear for the rwd (which usually wears out due to farmers using these to tow cattle boxes). Its a strange affair with drive to the IRD going in on the outside shaft, and the output of the front diff coming back on another shaft inside the first one. It may be the autobox is ok, but the IRD is toast...
I have no idea if this applies the same on autos as manual, or how to diagnose it....

Such a shame you arent at all local. I bought a Hawkeye Total a year or two before Bearmach dissapeared and it reads most LR models to a decent level inc Freelander 1.

Rear prop was removed by previous x2 owner, can't imagine that's IRD, has anything to do with it not moving.

Intermediate reduction drive, for anyone like me wondering what's an IRD.
