I wouldn't, it is going to be a dead diff and a dying auto-box.
You need something that works, not absorbs money and time.

It's a gamble, if it's dead, it's worth more in bits.

Just sounds like gearbox solenoids. Not a major fix

I had a manual TD4 for 6 years and apart from regular servicing/service items I only had to replace the radiator.

All that goes wrong with the Jatco autobox is the solenoids. Easy cheap fix too. Must use the correct oil though.

Normally goes into limp mode though in one gear, but I can't remember which one

Is there a dipstick on the gearbox ?

Could it be missing oil ?

Sightglass ? (Level indicator?)

Nope, it’s one of the daftest filling methods I’ve come across in ages. Fill it up, open an overflow plug and let it drain until it stops. But it’s also got to be at precisely 40 degrees c and is very picky over its oil choice…
And of course, you can drain about half of it out so you have to drain and fill twice just to get most of it out…
They are decent gearboxes actually with very little that goes wrong but they can be a pain when they do.

I had one. I absolutely hated it. Its like.land rover took good things and made them unreliable. Sold it at a bitmloss after 9 months just to get rid. Got a D2. Still have that about 15 years on although thats got a few bits that need doing now.

How are you getting it back Matt?

So I'm collecting it tomorrow, hired a 3.5t van with ramps and winch on the back, rated at 1350kgs, Freelander weighs 1550, so marginally overweight, but I can't see that being an issue, going to drop it off at the works workshop, as there's the local, bored, retired, incredibly knowledgable, ex village mechanic / garage owner, who is frankly on a par with the knowledge base on this forum, dunno if he knows auto Freelanders though ?

Pics tomorrow unless what I'm told doesn't correspond to what I'm going to get, it's costing me purchase price just to go fetch it.

So, I'll be ranting if the blokes telling fibs.
