OK good. So the engine starts. Do you feel a slight bump as any gear is selected ? Does it try to drive at all ?
First thing is to check the gearbox fluid for level.

Yeah, no, it's doesn't do nothing, apparently, only got it 'home' this eve, not even tried, but the engine runs sweet.
Yes, will check that first, probably drain it, and refill. ATF ?
Got gallons of that at work.

In what respect ?
The lads I bought it off seemed 100% sure it was a clutch issue as it slowly got worse.
But they didn't inspire me in their mechanical know how, nice honest guys though.

autoboxes do have 'clutches' that are better known as brake bands that can wear out, although it takes a lot of abuse to do so.

i would qualify that with check it has the correct amount of ATF in it first.

I wouldn't trust an old Land Rover handbrake, put it up against an old stone wall then try it
I would jack the front up, two wheels off the ground, spin one forward. If the other doesn't turn backwards time to remove the IRD. (Assuming of course both driveshafts are intact). The info that it constantly got worse over time doesn't point to a shaft or IRD failure though.

DO NOT USE STANDARD TYPES OF ATF IN THIS. Dextron 2 or 3 will bu**er it up in short order. Maybe the previous owners have done this and is the cause of the problem ?
It used a specific type of fluid. ATF N402
It is most likely an internal solenoid problem hopefully which does not need the gearbox removing, however make it easy by taking the front bumper and crashbar off and possibly the radiator.
Just a thought, check the shifter cable is connected and working.

I just google. freelander1 jatco, bad news is these are not as relliable as you might think. In fact I would say you are going to be learning quite a lot about Jatco auto boxes @Barking Mat ...
Time to look for a replacement box methinks, but make sure you get known good one, the breakers must be full of knacked ones...

Bend me over and spank me senseless with a big German sausage.
In 90mins I'd drained the one litre of dark brown ATF out of the box, refilled with three litres till it came out the level hole. Removed blocks of wood and jacks, tentatively put it in first, then through all the gears, worked perfect. I'm in a semi state of shock.

Rear window fully functional, all windows good, all lights good, headlights need polishing. A.C. needs recharging, as that's not working, on start, all warning lights come on, and go off, pro body work shop bloke next door will respray bonnet for mates rates....

It's a hardback model, mrs Robo had one, we did try lifting the hardback off once, but it was stuck so left it alone
