You won't. The government mandated solution is EV's. At a stroke this will kill any research into alternative fuels.

That makes sense. When I've dug back under most of these "they told us to buy a Diesel" comment they've turned really to be an incentive to improve economy or similar. Company car tax was a disincentive, with 3% loading for Diesel.
Either way I cant see buying Diesel as a bad move either then or now. Our "new" Diesel car cost me £1,700, does over 60mpg and has £20 road tax. But on my hobby horse of nobody caring about energy saving, my missus' company car, a 1980s Orion (Diesel of course) did 65 mpg.
What will kill EV is the cost.
When you have sportage at 24k and similar spec skoda EV at 45k it's just not going to work.
Second hand is going to be a minefield with scrap batteries.

As I recall at the time they were pushing diesels as being more environmentally friendly mainly due to lower CO2...to help things along there was an incentive in terms of VED too which was biased towards cars with lower CO2 (ie diesels)...in fact plenty of older diesels still pay <£30 a year VED!!!
The scrappage £2k applied to a range of cars (petrols and diesels) but the way things were moving it seemed like diesels were the better choice....oh and there was a VAT discount too as I recall.
I don't think any of the above is particularly controversial...it's basically the way it happened...so not forced but very heavily incentivised just like EVs currently.
Do you mean GW, power, rather than GWh? There are around 30 million cars in the UK. If these were all EVs using an average of 2000kWh per year, for 8,000 miles, that would amount to an 18% increase in UK's annual electricity consumption. If 10% of those cars are on charge at once they'd be drawing 22GW.
I can't find it now but a strategy paper from one of the DNOs said their distribution network could cope with one EV charge per day, per five households.

Tell that to the hundreds of thousands who are suffering from lung problems due to particulate inhalation . Many of out truck & other professional drivers drivers end up with bad health because of particulate pollution as they tend to be soaked in it for six or so hours a day because of their job.
I lost a good friend truckie who never smoked , rarely drank & didn't over eat , it was sadly disturbing to watch him slowly degrade & eventually die due to traffic pollution getting him .

I had to spend three days in London on a Commission for Racial Equality & job induction course , the six shirts I took with me looked like chimney sweeps shirts by half time each day when I returned to the hotel for a shower & change of clothing.
Back home it was three days of coughing & hoiking up dirty grey gobbets of spit as well as dozens of whelk sized nose picks & a week of wheezing before things felt back to normalcy/

Yeah a con lmao, watch the full series of videos starting in Scotland......Exactly the same problems a friend of mines had with his Porsche, the batteries packed up after 4 years and a 8k estimate to replace them. So he's sorted it by getting shut and buying a new Dodge.

Would that be the youtube video BMW with the largest battery towing a caravan, full charge to 25% charge in 95 miles. They had to disconnect the caravan to charge at motorway services. When leaving the service station they passed the vacant fuel pumps.

A fair comment they did make was electric is great for around town with home charging. On a long journey even if the charging was free there is no way i would accept a recharge time of longer than 10minutes, and that includes waiting to plug it in.

I’ve yet to go electric (company choice) but the others are not paying for the power and whilst it’s charging are earning double time. I won’t be seeking out superchargers, I will be looking for the slowest possible

Gave up driving Audis 3 years ago, so now it is hard to be a "badass" in a Volvo even tho it accelerates quicker than most most Audis
