Greater minds than thine & mine have been beavering away at this intelligent grid idea for over 20 years The ideas they have come up with are too much for some who have limited vision of where we ( the world ) is heading wrt energy sourcing and energy security .
When I read of the super grid some 15 yrs or more ago I realised that the luddites of the world would cause endless delays because thy can't see the value in them nor of having a vast mix of energy supply some of which will be in some form of storage . It will be nice to not be under the thumb so much of global despots and trade union strikers . What's not to like about that for you and yours .

Met a guy driving one of the first EV Merc's he said he has driven all over Europe in it over the last five years . He said recharging is not now a problem so long as you have several EU valid apps showing current charging places , many are not motorway places either . Almost every supermarket , big hotel or large pub restaurant has them at reasonable rates , obviously you have to plan a journey with more care thn in a TCE vehicle .
That said I see that there are now 350 miles plus on one charge, EV's in the market place . It won't be long before we see a reasonable 420 miler I'm sure.

I think there's a Chinese company called BYD who are about to release a 1,000km (600+ mile) range EV.
BYD makes the blade battery...it's a lot more robust...apparently they test it by crushing, bending and firing nails into it! I think they make the batteries for several other makes (possibly merc too but not 100%).
That's the killer for EV way way too expensive. No need other than greed.

Not if in the guise of pollution reduction , therefore massive long term health benefits that the government of the day make it stingingly too expensive for anyone but a few ICE vehicles ( government owned or leased to the emergency services etc ) to be on our road , it makes sense that this is the way things will go rather than an outright ban .
Governments are adept at moving the goal posts vial new legislation to prevent things rather than banning them. That's why the Magna Carta is all but a historical nonentity these days .

Part of the cost is the cost of insuring against component failure during the warranty period. Not just the battery (which are often un-recyclable due to coolant contamination) but the drive motor(s), PTC heaters, extended labour costs & specialist transport for the batteries.

I guess I could get all over Europe in 5 years on a camel if I tried hard enough. I don't believe "one of the first EV Mercs" comment at all from a practical point of view on my own travelling experience and working on a daily basis with people from Portugal to northern Norway and everywhere in between, if you are doing long distance time limited travel.
I do not dispute it is the way forward and it will work even for my pattern of travel/work, but I think we are 2 or 3 years off forcing employees to take EVs when the practicality means a flight is a better option - as said, greenwashing company stats.
An interim could be better E distance hybrids, but doubt investment there, which is a shame as could fill the gap until we are properly ready to be weened off IC.
But there are no massive long term health benefits. The UK is less than 1% of world wide pollution.

Hillman Imp was another....rear engine and helium at front.....most travelled with a sandbag as luggage. The ali HC engine was another issue.Interesting experience! Anything lightweight suffers the same way, yet for some reason my BMW K1200LT doesn't seem to be much affected. My own Mk1 Robin used to fly, 90MPH indicated and I noticed the leading edges of the doors opening due to the air pressure created.

What was that con out of interest? Not necessarily doubting, but I see comments like that but I don't recall any tax or other incentive for Diesel.

The government were pushing the sale of diesel vehicles as the fuel was cheaper than petrol and as being better for the environment while ignoring the Nox issues totally.
A lot of people bought diesels but then the cost of the previously cheaper diesel gradually rose above that of petrol. The emission controls in these cars was a rush job by the manufacturers that just couldn't keep up with the new limits ( look at what happened with all the VW, Audi, Seat, skoda vehicles ) I know from personal experience that Vauxhall made a botch job of the 1.9 CDTI engines! and caused untold misery and cost to the owners because they were very unreliable prompting people to do EGR and DPF deletes on them that added to the pollution.
Then all the bad emissions that harm people started being reported so they then started the persecution of diesel car drivers to the point we are at now.
They are doing the same trick to EV drivers now with taxation increases.
I've probably missed a few other things but as far as I know that's the way it is.

I was paid £2k to scrap my (perfectly good!) petrol to buy a diesel that now wouldn't qualify for ULEZ!....but the con was making us all believe that we were helping the planet by scrapping petrols to buy diesels!
Hence (unsurprisingly) you'll find a generation of drivers who are very sceptical when the gov says that EVs are the answer. I'd include myself in this group...personally I think PHEVs make far more sense together with carbon neutral liquid fuels. Maybe in 15 years I'll be proved right!

It does when it's quite clear that the wrong policies were/are being incentivised.
But the scrappage scheme didn't force you to buy a diesel. I know somebody who scrapped an old petrol Clio for a new petrol Clio.
And there wasn't really that much of an incentive for a private buyer to go diesel, other than most buyers simply seen the fuel economy and performance figures.
