The full electric vehicles apparently do more damage to the road than ICE.

I keep reading/hearing this a lot...just sounds like a load of cobblers to me!

I'm assuming this is an argument based on kerb weight...if so then I'm afraid there are some very (unnecessarily) heavy ICE vehicles around and nobody suggests those are destroying the roads!

When we were in San Francisco there were driverless Jaguar Fpace's going around the City all day long. They coped very well in the swirling chaos. We only saw one stop with what I assume was a fault (or flat battery) and that pulled over and put it's hazards on.

I had a LOT of fun driving my 1968 Reliant Supervan III on just a full motorbike licence back in mid 70's. Especially in snow !

They should be though!

I'd suspect that the expansion of the SUV and ever heavier, more powerful cars, has a major role to play in the ever decreasing state of our roads, however they be powered.

VED based on kerb weight is an excellent idea...anything that reduces the number of unnecessary 4x4s driving around London is a positive IMHO.

I'm not anti EV but work have taken the decision that all company cars will be E from now on, no hybrids either.
I asked for exemption due to a lot of EU travel and the stress and impracticality of it, car is due next year and need to choose.

Currently have a Volvo hybrid estate, looked on their website and all Volvo had were SUVs, thought must be a mistake, asked them on chat and they said they were no longer producing saloons and estates for the UK market, just SUVs - what???

Spoke to our carfleet manager and he said there is no way I can be made exempt, I said in that case I would fly to Rotterdam, Brussels, Dusseldorf etc, he said that's fine and I can also opt out, take the cash and buy whatever car I wanted - Total greenwashing to get the company to its net zero BS number...

Maybe the employees also like the 2% Benefit-in-Kind tax rate on their company car when it is an EV?

Is flying not just counter productive but using a bigger footprint of non green credentials.

That was obvious a couple of years ago that sooner or later the shortfall in revenue would be planned for and some other measures taken to make up for it.
Having seperate metering is practical, but clumsy. There's no reason why smart metering can't talk to the car and charge (hah) accordingly.

That is exactly what the third generation of EV chargers do , our was change out FOC three weeks ago . We tell the pod when we would like to charge ..usually low tariff and the power company's computer brain brings it on line when there is " Space " in the loading , So far we have always managed a full174 mile top up on low rate when we have asked for it . We can also charge in peak times at peak rates at home which is a lot cheaper than public charging or motorway charging if we needed it during days of 160 mile runs and needing another charge for a night time journey or to make sure we have the juice in the box if needed.


We will soon be feeding juice into the mains from our power wall and eventually perhaps from our plugged in cars. ( AKA " the Smart web ") I suspect the power company bean counters have already crunched the figures and see it as being far cheaper to use the punters investment in battery set up's to draw power from , instead of finding & investing £ zillions over 10 years or more before they get a return or start generating.


It's all about thinking ahead and changing your driving habits in the first few months of having an EV . It might be revealing if we get a ripsnorter of freezing weather with several feet of snow ,

They get the cheaper fuel and much reduced servicing costs benefit . which also often means a company can still keep the same level of workforce if they have big savings .

Bit off topic....but I was trying to work out the absorption capacity of EVs....I reckon 20k cars can absorb something like 1GWh of electricity?

The peak power in the grid (google) is 70GWh...so that could maybe charge 8.5m cars assuming a 6hr off peak period. Seems like there's a reasonable amount of capacity available (or my maths is off!).

Think our company is adopting too early for all employee road use profiles. Maybe in 2/3 years EV range and charging infrastructure over EU will be much improved, but it will not work for next year at least.

Also important is the increased EV car cost, I can't get anything like the spec I currently have in EV in my allowance.
