EV road tax

I've no problems paying to have the privileges' of using an electric car, however it is levied At least you'll be able to breath easier without the noxious ICE fumes & pollution.

If you're happy, that's fine by me. I suspect not everyone will be though , & will feel they've been "had" by their own Govt with false promises.

You have to be pragmatic in these things , the roads have to be paid for by someone , as well as handing the government a few more bags of dosh to let them try and implement their ideas .

I fully understand how it works. It is still far more efficient to keep moving than to constantly stop and start.

When approaching a roundabout, for example on the A217 stretch from M25 Leatherhead towards Banstead, which is all 40mph ASL cameras.
I can see the roundabout is clear and will often leave cruise control active at 40mph, given clear road infront. Some of the roundabouts I briefely pause then resume due to it being a sharper bend.

However every EV infront will slow right down to 10mph or stop regardless of the roundabout being absolutely clear. It is a massive PITA.
I do not sit on a cars bumper particually unpredicatable EV's but when they seem incapable or unwilling to make progress yet remain in the right hand lane it is extremely irritating.

That's not the cars fault it's the drivers actions and thinking . Should you really be driving if you find being in traffic irritating .

I think the highway code still has the sound advice of " Be prepared to stop and always be aware of other road users " as its main tennents.

Where we live DAPPH pollution from cars & "noxious fumes" aren't really an issue though.
Also as you know, our Welsh Govt isn't spending money on roads (& said as much - their intent is for us all to walk or cycle!) & their "ideas" are effectively ruining the country, not improving it!

I think this phenomenon might (at least partly) have something to do with the Demographic that drive certain types of car?
My motorcycling taught me to pay extra-special attention when behind cars like Citroën Berlingo's, Fiat Doblo's, people carriers etc - any car that's the antithesis of a petrol-head or "drivers car". Not cos the car was incapable, but the drivers tend to have no interest in cars, & none in driving - & put little attention or focus into how the drive.... basically poor drivers. Also a lot of older drivers. Some of these types will now be menacing our roads in an EV.

That said - my daughters OH has been a Postie for the last 2-3 months. Talking to him Xmas day evening - he has to drive an EV Postman Pat van, & was telling me that he & his fellow posties do end up driving "differently" due to the "Range Anxiety" & Regen factors.
The rural rounds, hills, stop-start nature of the postal delivery & collection rounds - aren't good for range. Add in the temps - & he says you're always focused on the Range Countdown to manage the range to ensure you xan make it back to the depot.
Often they are forced to drive slower than necessary, and he says brake down hills to initiate Regen to get the Range meter to creep back up a bit.
He drives with a window cracked or open to keep the windows from misting over instead of the heater-blower or the range gets (more) marginal - & dare not use the heater a lot of the time.

He says he (& colleagues) find driving the EV to be a stressful experience where your focus is always upon managing & ekeing out the battery above all else.
(For sure a great deal of this is that the vans the PO bought aren't the best range EV vans, & the nature of the use & topography here doesn't help either - but unquestionably the Postie's have to drive in an unconventional, slower style that's inconsistent with typical expectations..... as a direct consequence of the EV van).

Yet the only ones I am wary of are the opposite. Anything with an Audi badge especially, are worth keeping in front, rather than behind.

Yes they have dangled a few carrots - but an awful lot of us saw past the carrot to look at the long-term - & didn't take the bait.

We got caught by Gordon Browns diesel con when we bought a Zafira, the cost of fuel went up and up until it was way more than petrol, add to that the utterly unreliable nature of a modern diesel and it cost us a lot of money.
I won't be doing that again with an EV for a very long time if ever!

This ^ is just the governments distain for motorcyclists in general, as one of the best forms of commuting transport they've struck us with a road tax many times higher that a lot of cars that are stuck in traffic all day long polluting the air!

Strangely, they are not so much of a problem and nor are the Volvo drivers that used to plague us. It seems to be exclusively the majority of Audi drivers who turn into arrogant psychopaths behind the wheel, from the A1 upwards.

Yes, thats exactly it, a new breed of W@#£&!s, worse than old codgers or mums on the school run, worse even than the german cars that litter the roads.

And a smaller group in that category would be the tail end Charlies in a group trying to keep up with their mates just before a blind bend. You want to throw yourself in a ditch then crack on. Please leave me out of it as I don't need the hassle nor the paperwork.

I live on the edge of the Kielder TT route…as a motorcyclist of the vintage a few years before the RD250lc, it amazes me how some of these idiots survive….you obviously have the same bunch visiting your twisty roads.
