A router guide for cutting binding channels on an acoustic guitar. (The 'bindings' are the decorative strips around the edges of the top/back of a guitar body if you didn't know. A normal bearing guided bit doesn't work well because the angle of the edge isn't 90 degrees, and it varies as you move around the edge of the guitar body.)

Where did you get the plans and wood?

I made an acoustic guitar at a class above the Avalon guitar factory years ago so I had access to all their tools. It looks similar, walnut back and sides but with a cedar top.

I always fancied making another one at home but it's no small undertaking to make / acquire all the tools, before you even start on the guitar.

I have been gathering up a few tools but have a long way to go.
Maybe some day.

The ability to create compressed air without a deafening compressor running.

An old Hydrovane 5. Gave it an oil change, and added a pressure switch and a check valve.

Then plumbed it into the existing ear destroyer


I should probably replace the old Clarke filter and pressure regulator, but they still work.

Then to complete the setup, finally ran a dedicated line to the little mill to save having to drag through and trip over an air line-


Tweaked the pressure switches so the Hydrovane cuts in before and out after the other compressor.
Tested it all out, and the Hydrovane more than keeps up with the mill's vacuum table generator, running less than 50% of the time, so that's the little mill set for some new products without having to endure the big compressor cutting in and out.

The guitar is (will be) an OM from the excellent, free to use plans on the Grellier web site.



Body wood is from Keystone (as they offered a thickness sanding service) but there are a few other specialist suppliers (Radius DIsh, David Dyke, etc.) Rosewood back and sides, European spruce top, ebony fingerboard & mahogany neck.

I've been trying to do it with minimal [additional] investment in tools - the trim router and the time invested in making the binding jig are probably the most significant so far. Bit of a write-up on progress to date here:

Yesterday actually, I turned by far the biggest thing I've ever turned.



Bandsaw is faster than making swarf, cut the points off a square, then cut the points off the resulting octagon.




Finished part is basically a shallow taper between two big diameters, but it's a quarter scale train wheel if anyone asks. Did it at work so it's purpose is top secret (Or maybe it's just not very interesting and I want to create an air of mystery ).

It is but a lot less fun! Assuming that lump is ali that would have been great fun turning to chips, but I guess you have four reasonable offcuts.
If its steel then perhaps not so much.

I have been tiding moving stuff around the shed so as to get access to lathe

I have been unable to find a compatable 1/4 " sprocket for the fakita and decided best if I just convert the mini one to fit. It has a 10mm bore with 8mm flats, I am going to bore out to 11.95mm interference fit on 11.98mm shaft. I dont know if that will work with shaft having the 10mm flats. Or I could bore a good fit and put a couple of tack welds for the drive.

I will flip sprocket round the other way and braze the face in so the teeth are supported as its an intermittent cut. It is currently 2.2mm wall and will end up 1mm.

Yeah it's ally, I like the turning but im not so keen on hot chips burning my arm, especially when, I can set the bandsaw cutting and work on something else for a moment. As for the reasonable sized offcuts, they'll probably go in the bin. It goes against my home-workshop ethic of saving every little offcut, but at work time is money and ally is cheap.

Similar to Sako above, ‘dug’ out a bit scrap, and the Lidl plasma, and knocked out a little Labrador silhouette for my sister who is notoriously difficult to buy for. No doubt the other sister will want one… not the cleanest cut on earth but will be sufficient for the time being.

Now a silhouette like that would be handy. I was a bit masochistic and used a photo of one of my dogs. Printed it out and cut it out with a scalpel then traced around it.

I'm the first to admit I'm no craftsman, but today I finly refitted the seats & new seat base to carry my Mitsubishi Captains Chair & fit it to the correct seat mountings in the cab floor of my Renault Master.
It'll win no prizes, but I hope looks the part well enough to pass muster come MoT time.
(It's made from Unistrut welded-up so overkill strength, but I've folded, painted and stuck on a top plate & side plates to box it in a bit for a small nod to aesthetics given my talent shortage)....

In all honesty it wouldn't stand close scrutiny & isn't a standard that many here would turn out with their eyes closed.
But it's made out of what I had about rather than picking exactly what would be ideal, & the stuff Renault weld up isn't top-drawer (I've had to weld up the OEM drivers seat frame as well) - so I reckon it'll do.

with firepit and plasma, it was going to need some air holes, and it seems I will need to add more and probably bigger.

Got smokey as the bottom filled with ashes.

Sprocket silver soldered. I thought I could cheat using silverflo55 filings from a previous part as I wasnt sure it would wick down to the bottom face. The filings must have had some steel or dirt as they didnt really wet out, some small flames. I had given them plenty of flux paste.

Turned nicely even being intermittent. First cut took it to 10.2mm

Decided that it had not wetted out the face so there was little point in trying to turn the collar off, instead I reheated it.

Fitted compared go old sprocket. Its not a loose fit but has no drive flats yet. New plan is to turn some to braze in.

The mini 4 and 8" bars have a narrower mount and wont fit so test with the echo bar. I'll look for a cheap 8" bar for this but useful to know it fits.
