well just had another look , engine looks tight and no excess movement to suggest a mount
still juddering bad - so i guess its box off again

apparently they wont bolt up wrong way round...stay tuned , will pull the box mon/tues

soon find out..it was marked for flywheel side as well
tbh id rather see a glaring mistake , if it all looks nice i will worry its still going to be wrong

any thoughts on this
to get the box off you need to remove the drive flanges , they lever out as they have a clip same as a cv joint , and tap back in
if somehow id messed this up then would you expect no drive /terrible noises ? the car moves freely out of gear , kinda thinking is the gearbox semi locked up

Only if you hammered them in so hard that its damaged diff bearings. If they weren't actually seated/in place, even partially, then of course there would be no drive.
Do you get horrible noise/judder taking it to the biting point, or is it only with motion that you're getting the issue?

its at the bite point it judders , its so bad its not been up the road
no metallic noises and didnt whack any harder than need to be to fit the flanges , does almost seem believeable the diff or cv are locking up partly

We all make mistakes, can happen to anyone, but as you say, I think you will have noticed that, but ..........
A few years ago we replaced the clutch on a friends Sierra. Needed to go out in the afternoon so got the thing on ramps at set to it. Took about an hour.
Got it all back together and sat on the garden wall with a celebratory cup of tea before getting it off the ramps.
Only to notice both the new and old release bearing in the box ..........

nope...i paid attention to pull the bolts up a bit at a time on opposite sides , no reason it shouldnt have gone down but who knows
Before pulling the box out again, I'd personally try bedding the clutch in a bit to see if it improves. Pull away a few times in 2nd gear, and get a bit heat into the clutch. It might just be the new clutch on the worn flywheel, and all it's needing is a bit bedding in.

I took engine out to do my Mk2 16v (020 box) by the time I'd faffed about it worked out same time wise and easier.
On the GTO I used an engine hoist from the top to lift gearbox into position and to take the weight.
On the Kuga it was a flat motorcycle engine jack underneath and lift it into position.
Your Golf doe not have a Spigot bearing, neither does mine, or my GTO or Kuga. They are not that common from what I've worked on at any rate.

cheers for the confirmation on the bearing , rubjonny told me they dont have it so his word is golden
i had the strut top support thing holding the engine , then had a ratchet strap taking the weight of the box , also got a little gearbox jack thing to help raise it, its not great but better than nothing working alone

Totally off topic, but sort of relevant to lifting gearbox's and changing clutches laying on your back on your drive.
If you haven't already, check out Kevin Williams on the you tube. Just bench presses the box in and out, with the occasional onto the belly and yoik it up from there. I could barely lift the box out of my vivaro, let alone get it into position on my own, straight in for young Kev though, no messing about.
