fitted a new clutch - judders really bad

fitted a new sach clutch to my g60 golf mk2 with 02a gearbox hyd clutch if it matters

went ok , didnt really struggle , used an alignment tool , cleaned off the metal face before fitting , might have left a couple of grubby marks but its not caked in oil /grease

buttoned it up today its juddering something fierce , seems to operate ok the gears all select

any ideas ? cant think what i can have done wrong unless an engine mount has torn /not seated

any hope its a bit of grease that will burn off ?

It'll be the flywheelglazed/hotspotted. Nothing you can do without hsving it refaced or replaced.

I put a new dual mass flywheel and clutch in my 2007 caddy and it juddered a bit. Took about 1000 miles for it to completely settle in.

I was surprised! It wasn't bad enough to pull it again though. It settled down eventually.

id say its pretty bad , and the old one wasnt worn down /slipping , no obvious marks on the flywheel

Did you get the correct friction plate? There are different ones for solid and dual mass flywheel, also, did you clean the splines and regrease? I assume you torqued down the pressure plate evenly.... If the pressure plate is if the self adjusting type, did you remove the locking spring clip? Finally, is the friction plate the correct way round?
That's all the errors I've seen that would cause a new clutch to judder badly.

parts looked ok , correct part number in sealed box

its old fashioned non dual mass , no locking clips

splines cleaned and used the grease that came in the kit

id swear its on right way round ,it was labeled, the fact it operates all the gears maybe suggests it is?

slip the clutch a bit see if it beds in in a week or so if not pull the box

No dual mass on something as old as a Mk2 golf!!

Why did you change the clutch? Might give an idea as to which direction to investigate further...
Have you checked the lower engine mount? (Assuming it has one, I'm not exactly au fait with older VW's ) and are the driveshafts seated fully?

disengagement was very low , these have a reputation for cracked/bent operating arms inside the bellhousing , it drove smooth with no judder at all, was just taking the opportunity of the weather and a few quid in my pocket to replace

flywheel was left in place , looked fine , degreased before fitting the clutch
splines cleaned and greased with supplied grease
other owners telling me impossible to fit friction plate wrong way around
pulled the pressure plate down evenly doing up the bolts a bit at a time on opposite sides
new sleeve and bits n bobs fitted

yes to driveshafts..they bolt up with 6 bolts

i do wonder if having the engine hanging at an angle has killed a mount

my only other thought would be whether the spigot bearing or bush has collapsed, that would cause a huge amount of judder.

whats this ? the bearing the splined shaft turns in?

Yep, in the centre of the flywheel, it can either be a phosphor bronze bushing or a needle roller bearing.

You can just see the spigot bearing in the centre.

Many times. It usually gets worse when hot though

Did you change the pushrod guidebush behind the small oilseal in the spigot shaft? Just knock a new one in, don’t bother removing the old one. Then pull the back of the gearbox off and replace the release bearing that is sitting next to fifth gear.

Failing that, you bent the clutch plate fitting it. Did the box slide in all the way into the dowels, or did you pull it in with bellhousing bolts?

mines the 02a hyd clutch like a passat or corrado...youre on about the 020

box slid on fairly nice , didnt have any concerns while doing it really

What has been mentioned does point to a fault with the pilot bearing at the centre of the engine flywheel. This is a small needle roller bearing and it looks like it was not checked for wear or damage during the clutch change. If it is in someway faulty then full support to the gearbox first motion shaft has been lost and only the gearbox front bearing is providing some support. Unfortunately this can destroy the gearbox front bearing or perhaps the casing.
If it was my vehicle I would verify the existance and condition of the pilot bearing without delay by demounting the gearbox

i had someone look up the parts diagram , these dont have a bearing there
