Pathetic toilet query

Question for the water-welders...

The downstairs bog has got worse at flushing. Tugging the handle gives a kind of ineffective half flush and you've got to give it a few goes to persuade it to dump its load (!)

I moved the horizontal arm (mid-right of pic) round 90 degrees on the square shaft but that didn't make any difference.

Do I need to replace the entire green-and-transparent thingy (and, if so, what's the proper name?) or is there an easier fix?

it has a plastic slide inside of it

but it means box off replace the diaphram and refit back together

yours is not the twist type so its box and replace toilet pan connector and the diaphram

My upstairs khazi has the same issue and I know it is the syphon that needs changing. It's just that on mine it's a barsteward of a job.

Yeah - just saw exactly that same flush on screwfix for less than £15. If I've got to take the sodding thing off anyway I may as well just replace it.

Wife will have to get used to the cistern leaking onto the toilet floor for 3 weeks after I've done it (I hate water )

those are ok will last over 5 years after that it will fail they always do

the older type is much better i prefere the twist off type much better

It’s in the bit on the right. The pulley up thingy has a thin plastic diaphragm that can split or distort.
Sometimes you can be lucky and the part can be dropped out and the part replaced. I’ve made replacements out of thick polythene bags.
The part you’re interested in is basically a pump that starts the siphon when you pull the handle.

if you take off get the whole kit for the toilet pan and refit new

new bolts new seal and new pan bar is my advice you end up cutting the old ones off anyway

Did I mention how much I hate water? No matter how tight a seal I make the insert-swear-word-here always manages to leak out somehow

The more I refit and the more I cut, the more holes that are going to be leaking!

bite the bullet just replaced one of mine

I changed it when I bought the house six years ago. It's started to misbehave again and I just remember the fun and games. A bit of energetic ragging on the handle gets it to flush. Once it dies completely then I'll have to do something about it. Until then it's just a valid form of cardio exercise...

Then you change the washer and get another 5 years

Sometimes newer is betterer

you wont be saying wow where when your bent over the toilet cutting the 2 bolts off of them

you will be cursing them as they are the most annoying things to get off when they go rusty and your there with a small hacksaw cutting them in the most uncomfortable position going

I've fitted many of them, once fitted the flush part unclips from the top, replaced mine recently and didn't even turn the water off

Fit one of the old Clankety Clank ones only 2 moving parts and a chain.

just make sure you add it to 1/2 days work for you

fit new washers even on the water side turn that nut on slowly they can cross thread so easily on those plastic pipes onto the toilet

I'll buy that Screwfix thing, open the box, try to figure out how it works, put it in the cupboard, live with it for a year, come on here asking how to fix the flush, be reminded I asked a year ago, pull it out of the cupboard and fit it.
