A "year in industry" is quite common, you do two years at uni, a year of work, then go back to uni for a year to finish your Bachelor's (Or if you're doing an integrated masters, three years of uni, one year of work, then a final year of uni to graduate with a masters degree). Most people I knew at uni did this, and now they've graduated they've gone straight back to the same company.

They get a student loan and build up enormous debt like every other student does.

The company pay them for the year they work there (Usually around £18K - £20K), but that's it, they don't get any other support.

I just know that high pressure water and sewage isnt going to end well, probably with me wearing it! going to get a brush and the rods will do for the chimney as well

Good dimensioning and tolerancing really should be taught at uni, along with manufacturability. I've seen so many drawings with rubbish dimensions, overly tight tolerances and parts that would be so much easier to make with a subtle redesign.

Unfortunately from the number of calls I field, understanding GD&T also needs teaching to the people making stuff to the drawing, as well as inspectors checking it afterwards. Doesn't matter if the drawing is fully correctly dimensioned and toleranced if the people referring to it don't understand what it actually means. There's an awful lot of people who think they know what they are doing, but don't. A lot of components get made that work despite the drawing, not because of it.

I do often argue with some colleagues that while they are correct in their tolerances, and that their reasoning that, for example, their boxed dimensions are now less stringent than the drawing frame standards, the sight of them I reckon immediately causes a price rise from the supplier as they simply don't know what it all really means - never mind when the draughts-person actually misses off the tolerance they refer to as they don't understand what they really mean either . . . For quite some period of my careerI would be in that camp too - and sometimes I have to get the book/standards out to work out exactly what I need or I am trying to do - and sometimes fail.

Even better is when someone needing some further education applies machining tolerances to sheet metal to be sourced from out usual suppliers

That's how it was with the Sears "Craftsman" brand tools overseas. I've had sets over the years without ever breaking a wrench, ratchet, or any sockets.

Took a gamble as wasn't powering up correctly. Hoped it was a rail out on the PSU. Made my known good PSU pulse the LEDs so assuming I have a cap or two gone bad on the main board.

Have two more of these tucked away in storage. Should be able to resurrect this one.


Consists of a main board and 3 6 Chanel boards.

Long term plan will be to build up a big console with the boards as they are all somewhat semi modular

This is one of the reasons why I am so fond of "dual studies":

The student is always alternating between three months at the university and three months in the company - depending on the course of study, there are also different rhythms.

They earn money right from the start and in some professions even a pleasant amount, they get the academic polish at the university, but are kept within call distance of the practical side in the company.

This is how there is less danger of breeding specialist idiots, and those who have been able to shine in the company usually already have their first employer after graduation if they want to.

Only a few years ago, this study was considered inferior from the ivory tower, but now it has turned around.

Another nice option: complete the Bachelor's degree in a dual study programme, earn money for a while and then do the Master's degree at a old style university, possibly with a doctorate.

This system definitely breaks down some of the class barriers, since candidates from less affluent households can get a solid education without being burdened with enormous debts afterwards and is therefore perhaps not so desirable in the Anglo-Saxon world?
