Yesterday I acquired a non working contactless paper towel dispenser from the Charity Shed by our local recycling centre. For £2.oo I thought it would be interesting to see if I could fix it.
Had a closer look today and the problem seemed to be with the motion detector, so I looked at the posibillity of converting it to manual operation; which wasn't too hard to figure out, as there was a button inside the cover to initiate the feed of a new roll of paper into the rollers.
I decided to drill a hole in the cover and turned a new captive button out of some plastic rod. Everything lined up and fit ok, but it didn't work until I noticed and removed a disconnect switch which contacted the cover when closed.
Happy day, all works fine now and it will be a convenience in the garage. Here's some photos.

I have been looking for a decent socket set for home as I keep bringing stuff from the workshop then forgetting to take it back, needing it and having to head home to collect it.
Halfords sent an email yesterday and they had a socket set on sale, normally £330 supposedly, on sale for £264
Special deal in the email was however £200 so not too bad.

Hard thing I found with drain rods was remembering to keep turning them clockwise as you pull them out; I always wanted to turn them the other way

And with it being advanced if something does break then just take it back for a replacement

This reminds me of a mechanical engineer fresh out of university, on his first job in a real production company: without exception, he designed every bore in one of his drawings as a fit ... the colleagues and the foreman were not impressed for long, the QC panicked, nothing fitted.
In this case, however, I won't be able to do without journal countersinks/piloted counterbores.

I acquired a set of rods from a local freecycle group after having to borrow a set from my mate earlier in the year. The manhole cover at the end of the drive has the drain from here, but also from a few properties further up the road, so there's no way of telling exactly who had blocked it. Amazing how many people walk past and ask "having trouble with the drains?". It took great self control to not reply with "no, there's just nothing on the telly." Something, something, going through the motions.

Good dimensioning and tolerancing really should be taught at uni, along with manufacturability. I've seen so many drawings with rubbish dimensions, overly tight tolerances and parts that would be so much easier to make with a subtle redesign.
got one of them. 'somewhere' they were on offer at Aldi years ago. It was rude not to buy it.

This is one of the reasons why I am so fond of "dual studies":
The student is always alternating between three months at the university and three months in the company - depending on the course of study, there are also different rhythms.
They earn money right from the start and in some professions even a pleasant amount, they get the academic polish at the university, but are kept within call distance of the practical side in the company.
This is how there is less danger of breeding specialist idiots, and those who have been able to shine in the company usually already have their first employer after graduation if they want to.
Only a few years ago, this study was considered inferior from the ivory tower, but now it has turned around.
Another nice option: complete the Bachelor's degree in a dual study programme, earn money for a while and then do the Master's degree at a old style university, possibly with a doctorate.
I don't know if you have something comparable over there?
This system definitely breaks down some of the class barriers, since candidates from less affluent households can get a solid education without being burdened with enormous debts afterwards and is therefore perhaps not so desirable in the Anglo-Saxon world?
