Today I acquired...........

Well personally I put the plug in the sink, run some cold in then add hot to the temperature that suits. People have been doing it for years it only seems to be the more hard of thinking who have trouble with it.

... and then when I want to take a shower I rip the sink with the well-tempered mixture out of the wall and pour it over my head, it's obvious, I always do it that way ...

It was yesterday, and with a funny background ....

I found an offer for a machine of which I neither knew what its purpose nor how big it was, but the supplier was interesting: Stuttgart Airport.

They had two offers ...

... under the scanty description "Milling machine from 1974"

and ...

with the title "Brake drum turning machine from 1978" - superhumanly high.

Both at luridly low prices.


I have no immediate use for either of the machines and I wouldn't even be able to accommodate the large brake drum turning machine ...

... but it is clear from the pictures that we are in the maintenance area of the - after all international - airport and the price for the small machine was worth the entrance fee to the secure area to get a taste of airport air again and to establish a personal access to the procurement and decommissioning area ....

And this is how the little one came home with me ...

In the meantime, I know what it is and already have an idea of what I want to build from it ....


Nevertheless: Any suggestions as to what it is?

While taking pictures for this post, I dropped my camera with which I took all the pictures here before ... and it died, became an ex-camera, met its maker, ....

Just 17 years old and surely only dropped for the 25th time ... and already this newfangled devil's work is broken -
- everything used to be made of wood.

... also yesterday arrived the new_er one ...
... (still a stone old system), but I hate it when you can't touch anything without triggering some unintended - and hard to undo - function (hence still no "smart" phone).

Tip: The last person to use it was an electrician who retired 15 years ago and by then it was very rarely used.

On the one hand that and with additional attachable tools all contact slip rings could be ground over cleanly.

In its entirety - with now partly lost parts - a machine for several work steps in the overhaul of starters and generators in the (commercial) vehicle sector.

EDIT: And I have in mind to use it as a simple round and surface grinding machine ... let's see what becomes of it ...

I got them through a friend. I think he got them from a place in Bradford. I got a quote from a place in Barnsley initially but the carrier charges were a bit steep. I picked these up from his place, which is nearer to me, so it saved me a bit of money that way. The price for the parts was about the same.

When you come to fit the ribs to the top, you want a bit of plate with two holes the correct distance apart. You can then put it across the rib, with a piece of stud bar through each hole and up into the table top. Wind nuts on to pull the rib tight onto the top.

Does that make sense?! It’s how I got mine pulled down tight.

Thanks for the tip. I've been watching YouTube videos of people doing builds and threaded bar and plates seems to be a popular method.

Almost certainly not torqued or even tightened the last time the wheel was re-fitted, look for signs of fretting on the hub, wheel mount face and around the taper on the bolt holes, if they fell out it would probably have been a slow process,

Had similar on both my Sedona's after having the RAC & Kwik fit people putting the spare wheel on my disability vehicle
The noise started about 120 miles after they had been at my car, first just an odd click on a bend or hill or on braking, then in the next 20 - 50 miles a vibration in the steering wheel and a sound like a collapsing wheel bearing. then on pulling on the hard shoulder finding the rim stud/ bolt holes had elongated 1.5 x past normal and/or studs /bolts had sheared off.
Not the healthiest way of travelling on a motorway with a 2,000kg caravan in tow & all your family in the caron each occasion.

It wasn't long after that that the AA, RAC & Garages started putting a tick box on the repair sheet saying you were advised to have the wheels retorqued within 100 miles of the wheels being taken off & replaced . The last time it happened was on my Turisimo a few months ago after the wheels had been removed to check & rpl;lace the rear brake pades . Front RH wheel had not been set on square nor torqued up, just tyre monkey air wrench fixed.

Perhaps some thief trying to steal the wheel & tyre but got thwarted with the security bolt/nut on the wheel. Posh alloy wheels still command a tidy price down the pub or on certain internet sites etc.

There has been a big reduction in wheel thefts since mandatory fitting of antitheft wheel devices on all new cars for 10 or more years .

I've the exact same for 6yrs plus, I call it metalworker, used for wood a few times but mostly metal, very hard to stall, versatile bit of kit with the right belts and pads

After seeing them recommended on here I bought a pair of the Piergiacomi flush cutters on Amazon.

I went for a larger set as they can cut 2.5mm & were on offer. Unfortunately the 2 cutting edges don't meet properly with one edge sliding over the other when squeezed hard.

So they are heading back to Amazon for replacement.

It was probably me that recommended the smaller ones. I have 3 pairs and are all fine, especially for the cash. Either you just have a duff pair or the larger ones are junk.

Same here. Smaller ones are good cutters. I have several pairs.

Question for the forum:

I have been offered taps in inch sizes where only the diameter value is given, but no indication of the pitch.

Is there a standard correlation between diameter and pitch in inches if any additional information is missing or do I at least have to know the system (BSW, UNC, UNF, etc.)?

These are the sizes: 1-3/8", 1-1/2", 1", 7/8", 7/8" Pipe, 3/4" - the pictures look like pretty fine thread to me, may be the size is deceiving though ...
