This old Vertical Steam engine came my way the other day.
At first I thought it was a;
German Bing Engine.

But during the cleaning I found a Made in England stamp.


Also, there was some damaged to the end cap. Some one had fitted a screw into the whistle boss. Rendering it scrap.

Of yes, it was not air tight eiether.

So the first job was to find a suitable whistle and boss in my Mamod spares and fit it.

Soft soldered into place.


The other issue is the fly wheel came off.

You can see the wear on the brass bush. The original plan was to make it steam tight and ask nicly for a friend for more lathe work.


The tin plate is so thin, it was collasping under the weight of the water in the boiler.
It runs on compressed air, but I think it's steams days are over.

Here I am de-rusting with citric acid. It was a strong mix and the red oxide was turning black very quickly.

any who. this mornings efforts where mostly successful.

needle gunned and dinitrold the front crossmember and bumper support steelwork

smashed step removed and new step fitted.

front bumper fitted

and rest of front panel work fitted.

mudguard wings and other panel work removed for paint

just have to paint the rest of the panel work and refit.

and drill out a load of the captives and clean up the rust on the hidden areas...

looks much better though

This PO Meter came my way yesterday.
It needed some attention. The stuck needle is clear.
A trick is some times test it on a high volt and that soemtimes frees the needle of. This case the glass cover was pushed in and that was jamming the needle. Well the first look indicated that.

Opening it up, the glass was on the needle, but also the coil and needle pivot was seized.
A bit of warm Singer Oil and a tooth pick soon had it free.
Live test showed it to be work on all volt ranges.

New leads, Ex MOD AVO leads.

The leather case was cleaned with warm water and washing powder. Yesterdays sun had it dried. Then wax was applied in a lot of thin layers. You could see the wax being absorbed into the leather.

The case is now soft and the leather handle is now flexible.

primed the next batch..

there where a couple of cracks in the fibreglass, which i vee'd out and filled with repair paste. once sanded back its as strong as new.

just a half hour wait and a coat of black.

Why not use gelcoat as the first layer in the mould ? Then they are coloured from the outset, that is assuming you made them

Decided to attack these broken off studs myself (forty of the kin things), picked up some cobalt drills and helicoils, fitted a chuck to my mag drill, made a jig plate which I doweled and bolted to one the new discs.

Excellent job you made of that...I have the same Mag drill as yours,great bit of kit.

Not sure if it counts as fixing, but an old PC running windows XP gave up (running an old CAD/CAM package that requires XP), HDD crash. Fortunately I did a backup of it using Disk2Vhd in january and I turned it into a virtual machine. However, when booting it I was required to reactivate Windows XP... Can you even do that anymore?

Turns out you could using a link to MS I found on reddit. So yeah in 2022 I reactived a legal copy of XP, will keep running as a non-networked VM for as long as needed.

My old calculator!

Hadn't been used for a while, and it was dead.
Batteries had leaked, so replaced them, and thought all was well until I tried running some numbers, whereby I discovered a column of buttons had stopped working
No (-),3,6,9,)or TAN doesn't make for a very good calculator.

So screws removed, case split revealed this mess -

Cleaned it out as best as I could, thinking maybe something just shorted out, but still no buttons, so back apart, and the PCB out to check the button side.
Found this -

Quick clean up, and out with the soldering iron -

And the missing buttons now work -

Don't know about XP but the phone activation service for Win 7 still works, had to use that a couple of weeks ago when I moved the Virtualbox image to a new machine. Didn't want to connect it to the network to do the activation, for obvious reasons.

This plough land wheel arrives in 4 pieces,it must have crabbed,as it had worn right thru on 1 side.
Rolled an insert from 16 square,welded that inside then attached the second side,welded the hub back in,after a bit of straightening of course,so nearly a days work,they must be expensive and/or unobtainable,I’m guessing Dowdeswell.

Bit of fun today. Got a day in the garden and play pen.

I got this, for spares. The springs in the jaw is what I was after. I was told it was seized and I could have it cheep.

I wonder why.

Stripping it down was easy enough. But at some point in it's life the top handle was glued into place with animal glue.

The wooden parts were cleaned using Meths and a wire wool..

The worm was old, but I treated it anyway.
Metal work was cleaned and sealed. The chuck was dismantled and a dry lubicant was used.

In the last picture above you can see a novel Plough plane.

This is how I got it.
The blade is dull and has been dressed with apower tool, the blue from the heat can bee sean.

The metal cleaned up well and was pleasent to clean.

This is a hand made tool.

The4 blade was heated to a bright red, then allowed to cool in powdered charcoal.
Then cleaned and heated to a dull red, still with the charcoal dust still in plcae. Cooled in cold water and then dried.

The edege was then re ground on a wet stone, then the cutting edge was tempered to a purple shade.
