Yep you set the flow at the tap end and the rest goes by the ball and spring. The spring sets the pressure at the tap, the tap sets the flow. Use a light spring so it doesn't jet past the tap when it's only cracked open.

I am thinking parker pen type spring here

Yeah that's it. I re-purposed some random fitting but you could just as easily turn something in half an hour.

Tbh I think the grundfos is going to be miles too pokey. They have a decent output whereas you need dribbly tap flow rate.

If its a true centrifugal pump they can be run with a closed discharge valve. In fact in most process use they are-fitted with at least a check valve in the discharge line, and often a motorised discharge that remains closed until manually opened or operated by a control system.
The spill valve in Petes post is how you would operate a positive displacement pump. But no harm in a centrifugal pump either.
I used a pond pump for a while, worked ok, wasnt dear. And sat in the coolant tank.

Some centrifugal pumps have a limited time to run with a closed outlet because the flowing liquid carries away heat. Our hippos ae 2hrs max IIRC. No limit if they are actually pumping though.

Great, I will try without first if it is too fast then I will ad it in, I wonder if dropping the voltage down from 12V would slow it down or if the pump might not run at all

well that pump would not pull the oil through maybe it is a bit too thick. or the pump needs some more amps I will try that tomorrow

Did it have a positive suction head, and was it primed.
