A old lamp oil tank, from about 1890 GWR lamp.
So no chance of getting one. It is made with a copper base, brass wick holder tube and a thin mild steel body.

It is too thing to weld, any naked flame will cause the remains to melt.

So what too do?



Hot air paint stripper, Yorkshire flux and pipe solder.
A good clean and using the air paint stripper warm it up, apply the flux and then "Dap" the solder on.

Allow to cool.
I have quickly mocked it up here, the solder will be filled back.




This what it was saved from. I plan to fit it into my new to me lantern.

My partner rescued this kids tricycle tandem last week ,from the skip at the nursery our twins attend,as well as a giant articulated car transporter( it pees me off the stuff they throw out,whilst at the same time have regular fund raising/ scrounging pleas),so it needed a new wheel as it’s got 2 flats,how the hell! A wheel was found off an old portapak trolley,so an axle was made ,drive spigot & cranks welded in then reassembled.oh & a grease groove in the axle.

That’s an old Community Playthings tricycle (sounds like the tuck is as well) it probably cost the best part of £300 new.

Was asked last night if I could look at a Timberwolf wood chipper that had took a heavy hit from a car traveling to fast. The knife opening had been badly bent and suffered two breaks. The feed chute was quite chewed up and ended up facing the ground. I couldn’t get the chute completely straight because the customer had no hydraulics or press onsite so I had to improvise

As always “ how soon can you fix it “

Had the machine up and chipping in a few hours.

Started the latest overkill project and got as far as tacking using some lengths of square box up this morning...

But then later this afternoon took it apart as it had a bit of twist between the sides and I want to / know I can do better.

Really enjoying doing it all by TIG, too.

Made hub for aec bus fan , blued in the taper to make sure it was good. Just need to source some friction material for clutch.
Also had emergency job to make some drive shafts for a ac cobra 289 . Someone else had been there first and made them too long and wobblier than a wobbly dogs ..

Aye, but I think they only have screw-cutting tips in - I must check to see in I have tip which would fit, to make them 'multi-purpose'.

No rest for the wicked, after repairing the Timberwolf chipper today I was asked if I could build a little fire pit. It’s almost finished, just need to weld the legs on tomorrow but now it’s time for badger beer

Finally found the time to get my welding bench stuck together.
It's not finished yet as it's been built low so it stores under the bench down the side of the garage, the tubes welded in the lower cross members are supposed to be for some legs to raise the height by means of a very cunning mechanism, so extremely cunning in fact that it doesn't work.
Need to order some more steel and threaded rod, odd little bits so it'll cost me, then try again.

Made a metric drawbar for my Cincinnati vertical to be able to use bt tooling on it.
Tread is m24x3
Tried some bang good threading inserts, the form is bad and takes some faffing

A wee bit of plasma cutting and some flat stock stuck together to make the first of 13 shelve brackets for a job at the railway.
we are putting up some shelves to display a few donated live steam model engines so i thought it would be a nice touch, i might make some of the others different railway items and not have them all just loco's. any way it was nice to be in the workshop...

Did a bit of work on my gear hobber.

First was a belt guard for the cutting oil pump. This is driven off the main motor and is a gear pump that sends oil from the reservoir up to the hob which then drains back down from the tray into the reservoir. It's about 60 or 70 years old and tends to leak a bit which causes the belt to fire oil all over the floor/your legs and feet. I got fed up with this so I bashed out a rough and ready belt guard from some scrap ally sheet. Oil now drips into the tin instead of flinging all over the floor.

Next was a pressure relief valve for the oil pump. There's a tap at the end of the pipe but you can't turn it off because the pressure goes though the roof and stretches the bolts holding the pump together, and stalls the motor. I stuck a tee in the oil line and knocked up a ball-and-spring relief valve which just dumps into the tray. Now you can adjust the oil flow (or turn it off completely) and it never bothers the pump.

Finally I made an over-sized cutter guard because the original didn't quite fit over the largest of the hobs. I just knocked it up from a bit of old stainless tube, welded a stub on it for the cutting fluid feed then drilled through the feed tube to make a port for the oil. It works great but I got the feed hole very slightly low. Doesn't matter because the larger hobs tend to also be longer so the oil gets to where it's supposed to be as you can see in the pic. Here I'm cutting a 16DP gear for someone's lathe gearbox.
