enots brass pumps?

Is any one familar with the enots brass pumps like the one in the link below?

This was the one on my power hacksaw. It was red hot and making a racket. Perhaps they do not like running dry. Just wondered what to expect when or if I have to take it apart. It might still work if it has some oil to pump.

just fill it with oil and see......it's bronze so almost self lube...
dont take it apart....unless u have to....I'll bet it'd be ok....
it wont be the first time this has happened to it.....

I am reakoning gear pump.
Ok I will rig something up with some oil to test it.

Doesnt look gear pump to me, casing not normally round. if its vane make sure you turn it in the right direction. Id whip the end cover off and have a look.

I presume the arrow on the cover dictactes the way it should turn

That is direction of flow.

Just a worn o ring I reakon the belt was over tensioned and putting too much pressure on the o ring.
Paper gasket had gone so I used a smear or rtv

That is a packing gland around the shaft, and should be tight enough to stop it leaking butfree enough to allow it to run freely. Should have some kind of packing material in it.
The oval hole partly down to the belt too tight, but Id suggest-its worn inside too to allowing to run off centre.

Did you conclude what type of pump it is?

What kind of packing material are we talking about here?
when I blew threw it it was leaking air from the shaft end where the O ring is.
It may not last when re-installed back onto the saw but at least I tried to save it.
I dont know what you call these pumps! Cetrifugal is it?

There are lots of differnt packing for valve glands etc, selection is dependant on its service, the link above will give you an idea. Its basically a fiberous material impregnated with graphite etc. cord like a starter cord dipped in oil would work if wrapped around the shaft then the gland tightened up, for testing purposed.

A centrifugal pump needs a positive head, the impeller rotates, imparting velocity to the fluid. The pressure is generated by pushing the out going fluid through the static part. Impeller needs to be quite a good fit in the fixed part or the fluid will just pass back to the suction.

Could I use my old central heating pump instead to pump cutting oil instead? it is a Grundfos, sitting on the garage floor in the way for 7 years now!

Just thought I could even use a magflow filter to attract any swarf that does get past the tank baffles!

You could use that pump but you would have to put a tee in the line with a relief valve to dump excess fluid back into the tank. I had to do that with the gear pump on my hobber.

I found a ball bearing and a spring and turned up a quick relief valve.

Yep you set the flow at the tap end and the rest goes by the ball and spring. The spring sets the pressure at the tap, the tap sets the flow. Use a light spring so it doesn't jet past the tap when it's only cracked open.
