I was in Canada in 1997 .. In Toronto in the Eaton centre we went to a big camera shop to buy my birthday present camera as there wasn't much available in the UK for sensible prices .Compacts like that are usually under rated or discarded due to "not enough megapixels"
In reality they are often better than most phones (yes I know, your phone camera is awesome) but they use ai and processing to achieve it, blown up or viewed on a calibrated monitor most phone camera pics look like phone camera pics, and the new ai bokeh modes just look wrong
Compare a shot taken on an f1.4 50mm lens and a phone camera with fake bokeh and you will see what I mean
I go into the shop and am approached by a middle aged intelligent looking guy , smart as a button , dressed in a blazer & tie type uniform .
" I'd like to buy a digital camera please."
" How big do you want it Sir ?"
" 6 mega pixels " says I .
" Six Sir , Oh no Sir , no one will ever be using that much memory ,it's just so enormous . "
He was gobsmacked when I told him that Fuji had brought out a 24 mega pixel camera a fortnight ago and it was to cost about £24,00 pounds UK Now look at things 24 mega pixel is as good as the indsurry standard / norm for a decent camera .
I ended up with the very latest release 2.2 mega pixel with the sliding barn door similar to the one below , I thought it was crap when I took pictures of our new born in late Dec 2001 as they were so grainy & blurred when put on Alison's brand new Nov 2001 work computer that was used for high spec scanning & enlarging etc. .

Not long after this camera buying I became friends with a guy who travelled the world for Rolls Royce engines , flying over crash sites & photographing them from many angles then stitching the pictures together to form 3D pictures if needed. He wouldn't tell me how many pixels his cameras had or who made them but said they might be on the non military market in five or so years . He was able to show me a picture of a coke bottle from over four miles away on his enormous unbranded 30 x 35 square inch monitor with the size of the bottle as big & the logo as clear as if it were in my hand .
