Metric mics are fine, you can eyeball 0.005mm resolution between graduations which is more than you'll ever need to work to... 0.1mm taper is good enough if you can't get it any better. Its as likely to be wear in the ways as much as anything else.
0.005mm is just under 2 tenths in bananas, that's well enough accuracy for anything other than watch making!

yea not sure on the wear hoping its not terrible due to the relatively easy upbringing this lathe had before it got hacked onto a pallet and into my garage , Indeed plenty accurate for anything I plan on making but nice to know what tolerences it can hold .

Had some more good results on the lathe alignment today and sorted out most of the electrics need to finish off tomorrow

Looks like about 2 tenths give or take was squinting to read the mics in-between lines haha

So now the perfect lathe to take up my lifelong passion of watch matching

As fizzy says not bad ol machines

Electrics in progress , grey shiny box is filtering the choppy digital VFD power into nice smooth 3 phase 440v that the motor was designed to run on back in the day

VFD mounted behind original control panel plate with the controller on an extended ribbon cable fitting where the 3 phase plug would normally go in.

Then for the starting switch using original switches and relays to make it look nicer and more standard, it will switch a 24v relay circuit that will allow it to be like a NVR (no voltage release) switch so if power goes off and back on the relay will have de-energized and the lathe wont restart without pressing start again.

Will add this to my VFD thread at some point to help anyone out in future.

VFD wired up onto the original power board to keep the original look as much as possible. Was a bit of a squeeze getting VFD held along with switches and relays then all wired up neatly and connected to conduit in the back. Also power filter fits in behind that quite snug.

Using the OEM switch to switch the mains 240 that feeds the VFD over 3 poles to handle the current. Then the start and stop buttons are wired into the relay which activates the VFD 24v system that does the logic for turn off and on aswell as programming.

Had to make an extension ribbon cable for the VFD display so it could be mounted further away. Also cables with a decent length so can pull out panel and sit on board with it all plugged in for modification or easy to remove.

Isolator wired in.

Final panel back on really pleased with it that's the last major job I think another few sensors to add and what not as I go but the majority of installation work done now fully plug and play.

Drive dogs covered in oil for long term storage

Don't even have the spindle centre do can't use them at the moment and it's some daft 4.5 Morse taper quite hard to find but will lookout on eBay as handy to have with the dogs and drive plate and get between centers capabilitiy.

Yea good point can't complain about what came with it all the extras and add ons except the centre lol.

You can make a spindle centre easily enough they don't have to be hardened and ground. When you want to use it just turn the point true and mount your part..

Yeah I was worried about wanting a spindle adapter for centres as well, until I realised how easy it is to do what Pete says. Just means you lose 200-300mm of bed length, but if it comes to that, likely it would be a job worth hunting an adapter for... or farming out!

Scraped all the crap light green paint that must have been painted over oil or something wasn't sticking at all just used a squished Pvc tube to scrape off

Needs more work than this but will do for now really prefer the original I think dark green colour

Calling triumph owners

Bit stuck on how tight these belts should be , at first they where all flapping about like everyone's fences last night and that was a little bit less than I guestimated it was before , now tightened up a little to stop the flap seems to have a bit of vibration which hard to show on camera so just filmed a tub of water at the end lol. Noticed with clutch engages vibrations do go down but still there

Manual reccomends 3/4 movement when pressed by finger in the between the pulleys so about that maybe a little loose but did not want to over tighten as Harder to tighten than it is to loosen.

Also get a watch of how the VFD is set up and start up on it quite pleased

Intresting , Heavy cuts before when they where flapping about the cut was all groovy with lines which I thought may be due to the belts moving slightly under high load.

Cheers pete have little idea what I am looking for on lathe belts so out of interest how could you tell they where too loose is it the vibrations or how the belts were moving
