Did a favour for the the local butcher, he built his own shop and did the plumbing and electrics, he says to me the Mrs keeps getting a tingling feeling off the sausage machine what did think it could be?
I stick the earth loop impedance tester on the set up and no earth! worked back to the consumer unit he had fitted and sure enough no main earth! easy fix but could have ended badly

They confuse it works with its safe…. That’s the problem with electrics vs plumbing in that you will find out fairly quickly if something is not plumbed right vs electrics that can sit happy until a fault/the right conditions occur and bang…

Same for these cowboy fitters who'll fit kitchens, bathrooms etc, instead of hiring in the right guys to do the job properly, they'll do it themselves to save a few quid. if it's a wee move a socket here and there aye maybe, change a light fitting etc but when it comes down to knowing the regs etc, most won't have done it, or couldn't do it if they tried.
I served a full apprenticeship, 4 years, why do folks think that they can learn the same trade in 10 minutes from YT.....

With All the tails left un terminated at the consumer unit I called a spark in to connect whilst all the walls and ceilings where still down.

He couldn’t find anything to pull me up on.. he then wiredthe consumer unit (which I was happy to do myself but knew he’d do it neater) up and signed it off.

You don’t have to be qualified to be competent.

I did that in the last house. Worked well. If you’re of a certain mind you’ll probably do it neater and more carefully than a pro who wants to get to the next job. But. I took guidance from him every step and left everything open so he could see it before
He connected and signed it off.

Some folk I wouldn’t trust with crayons let alone stuff that can kill you.

agreed, although it's easier to be incompetent when you're not though, and don't forget that there are also qualified incompetents too.

I know my limits. I've said to customers in the past that jobs are either beyond my skillset or I don't have the means to undertake by myself.

Found out later he had rewired his house himself, earth carried current.

Well, I rewired a lot of my current house (trust me, that is pretty quick for me :-) ) myself. The dining room for instance had old wire, old old wire and silk wound on ceramic pots

We had three different type of plug sockets. I know the house is old, very, but I did expect a little bit of conformity and continuity. Some days you have to use what you got, but that does not include using 1mm in place of 2.5mm. I have heard that in the DIY sheds: "But it is cheaper!!"

Did the same . . . wondered why the cooker hood didn't work . . . he'd tightened one screw down super tight on fresh air in the fused switch - the conductor was floating free . . . the other one, the wire was in the right place . . . just not clamped . . .

When looking at the consumer unit under the house to see where I could add my hydrovane, notice one of the connections looked a little brown . . . clamp screw on a ring main tightened down tight . . . actual conductor sat on top of it rather than under . . .

Ex-s house after a re-wire . . . loosened a socket plate so she could wall paper behind . .. the wires fell out . . . then another . .. checked the entire house after that - found a few more. Up in the loft - holes drilled through all rafters to pass cables through . . . and the cables then draped over the top of them . . . meaning loft boarding was a little more complicated . . .

He blamed the apprentice . . .

I might not have employed a "professional" the next time I needed something doing . . .

Did something similar when I wired my 'new' garage several years ago. The spark's 'starter for 10' was for me to run the cables and do the conduit work and he would terminate and test. After a bit of a chat, and after he had taken a look at my other garage workshop (pre part P) wired by me. He let me do all the work and just did the testing. here's part of the install that he tested.

Plenty of other things that can ruin a life or kill that needs no certification for example used to work in a hydraulic specialist company, Electricians have trade body plumbers are gas safe etc just looking at hydraulic injection injuries and what it can do to someone who has no idea what the previous bodger has welded up or made and had it on 200 bar oil pipe/hose

Anyone else not know that the word ‘electrocution’ didn’t exist until someone invented the electric chair? (Elec > Execution). Apparently they still have trouble getting this right.

the job im on at the mo is interesting to say the least. testing the wiring and found the 3d floor extension ringmain is fed of spur socket on the landing it gets better . took the floorboards up to disconect the spur socket and found it was conected to the shower cable with a jointbox along with another spur wired in 1.0mm cable to a jointbox then wired in 1.5mm flex to a socket theres a list as long as my arm on the faults that have to be rectified

Brings to mind this old favourite, which probably applies as much to plumbing, electrics etc. as it does to vehicles (and I'm sure the rates have gone up!)

Had plumbers in last December to move plumbing and fit new radiators. Painter was in last week and couldn't get behind the new radiators (pic below) so I said "Don't worry! I'll take them down and refit them after you're done!" knowing full well that the tiniest leak would mean me begging the original plumber back in and adhering to the price structure above...
