Colchester triumph lifting plate

Steve@Landylift and I went to pick up my 13" geared head Covmac lathe (pics on lathes.co.uk), and I had been there previously to strip every bit of weight off it that I could. The motor was about 2cwt, and the plate it was on was almost 2' square and just over 1" thick, cast iron of course! well it all came off, including chuck, tailstock, tool post, gear case, gears and banjo. When what was left was swinging about 6 foot in the air on three straps, I casually asked him what his hiab would lift, He replied "About this much actually" We were externally calm, I was just screaming inside! I cannot recommend Steve@ landylift highly enough, the man is an absolute expert and a real trooper to boot. Nerves of steel and a heart of gold!!

I'd thought about asking him to quote for moving my new mill, but I think its heavier than his hiab can manage.

On the subject of chucks and backplates. I have need to make an adapter between an L2 spindle mount 250mm backplate and a 250mm bison 4jaw as the mounting bolts for the bison fall into the hole in the centre of the backplate, so I need to turn a plate to bolt the chuck to from the front, and then bolt that to the backplate from the back (possibly from the front first, haven't had it all next to the spindle yet. Would mild steel be OK for this or am I better with en8 or something? It's not in contact with the spindle nose so don't need cast iron.

Yes they are but they would already have a QCTP fitted.

We successfully shipped a short bed Triumph for someone through our pallet service. Obviously forklifts at collection and delivery. It didn't overhang a blue pallet that much. Perfectly safe. The long bed like mine would be a different story though unless on a custom pallet.

Just as food for thought, is redrilling the holes in the chuck a possibility? Especially with a four jaw, there is a lot of space between the pinions and no scroll to drill though. Plug up the old ones and stamp 'oil' on the plugs.

That was my first thought but there isn't really anywhere that's not hollow or has something on the front. I've ordered the lump of en8 now so that'll be the first turning job.

I put some coach bolts dome down in the 7 bolt down holes, there are 4 proper adjusters on each end of the usable bed but they're not easy to adjust at the cabinet end. Made it really easy to lever into place with a big bar or two too.

Lathe is in the workshop now and the apprentice has already cast his eye over it

For some reason nobody wants them.
The short bed version doesn't take up much more room than a Student and they go for silly money.
That spindle size is crazy!

It came with quite possibly more than 400 worth of Kennametal carbide tip tooling... Its far more lathe than a student and more than i think I'll ever use tbh!

Well lifting plate machined today, I got 100x25 flat so it's wider than the drawing but that's just more surface to lift on so less chance of ballsing the ways... Went with an m20 long lifting eye bolt which is rated at 1600kg in use so 600kg more than the lathe.

Bottom plate is tapped M20 and the nuts are there as backup

Just downloaded the manual, has a drawing of the lifting plate in it. So I'll just make one, might go metric on the eye as I've an m20 one I know is good and rated to 2t or something. It lifts my welding bench with 30mm thick top so...

Incidentally, @fizzy if you or anyone else with a triumph wants a copy shout and I'll share the pdf.

Cambridgeshire I have some 20mm plate was gunna make the width slightly wider as it isn’t inch thick so it’s the same volume of material

Hey @dan.taylor.1 Do you think I could get a copy of that triumph manual with the lifting plate dimensions? I cant quite make out the numbers in your screenshot and cant seem to find a pdf with the plate dimensions. Also cant inspect the lathe for direct measuring beforehand

I need to make one as well.
My Holbrook H17/H20 use the same silly arrangement. Instead of 1250kg though they weigh about 5000kg each

If you blow the original image up to 250%, the dimensions are legible. See below.

What is interesting is that the metric numbers are easier to read than the imperial fractions. Another string in the bow of the metricists.
