My Granny had an old saucepan that burnt in one spot on the bottom - she blamed jam making in 1697 for it - sugar stuck and burnt. She had a Rayburn with flat hot plates on top - I noticed it wobbled slightly in 1990 - quick tap with a hammer in one spot . . . no more burning.

I still use the same saucepan

I have an induction hob at home, if I use a cheap frying pan that's not 100% flat on the bottom the pan gets hot spots!
I suspect the bottom being flat is just as important as the inside?

With the oil fired range cooker we have, having good contact between the pan and the hotplate is the only way to get stuff to cook OK. The underside of the pan I've just machined is pretty flat, so from that perspective was OK. It Just needed a lot of oil/fat to successfully fry stuff before I machined the dome off it.

One of those jobs that have been waiting a very long time to complete!
These are very heavy chunks of hardwood banded at the ends. Someone may recognize their provenance....?
I like having a portable vice as well as a bench vice.

Finally getting stuck in to my compressor refurb, I picked it up from the local scrap yard and needed a few bits sorting out

Came from a carpentry shop and they had run it with no air filter and inside the pump was a bit of a mess



Cleaned up ok, very little wear and is now all back together

Stuck the 3D printed repair part to the motor box



Rewired and all back together



Just need to pickup a new drive belt and start using it

Finally fixed the Bridgeport x & y feeds and connected everything up to a VFD through the original control panel.

I scooped decades of gunk out of the motors. Oddly, they had new brushes in so someone had had a go in the past.

The boards were busted so I cobbled some stuff together to get it running so I'm a happy boy...

Well I was until, having moved the table around a bit, the knee to table axis developed a serious amount of play. Checked the gib and it's wound all the way in. I guess it's time to have a go at shimming the gib.

Anyone know the best way to do it? I thought I'd wind it out a bit and poke in some feeler guages to size the gap then cut an appropriate thickness shim for the back of the gib. Any good?

Yeah but the screw has a shoulder which bottoms out in the recess in which it sits.

I'll grab some pics when I have a go at it.

A new gib, if the old one is worn, an oversize - but you'd probably have to make it, or shim it.
I shimmed a Hartford (Taiwanese Bridgeport) on x & y, quite tricky due to the oil ways.

It looks like an automotive bushing tool but that brass threaded insert makes it way more engineered than any car bushing tool I've seen. Is that an oring on the plunger?

Thats like a mini bearing that can also spin?
Its all very well made and would have been expensive I suspect?
