I've got 18mm skirting to go on after it's installed so should be fine as far as expansion goes, I'll open the ends of the packs a couple of weeks before starting just to let the moisture levels equalize. I don't really want to float it as it'll sound like a laminated floor that kind of defeats the reason we bought expensive solid oak.

We have an engineered oak wood floor in our extension, been down about 7 years. I love it but it's a very sunny room and when you move the furniture it's a different colour underneath lol.

I think laminate flooring is more uv resistant though. You do get a nice warm feeling underfoot with real wood floors, which I like, and I think they look nicer. But if I was having ours done again I'd probably get a high quality laminate as the oak floor has loads of dents and scratches in it where we've dropped stuff.

We have Luxury vynl flooring in our holiday lets looks far softer to the touch than laminate and easier to keep looking the part

Yup. Your gonna have no choice on nail position on one axis so might be a safer option.

I'm confused about the axis thing, can you explain further? 
It also dawned on me yesterday that I want the boards to run front to back through the house but the joists also run front to back, I really don't want to balls this up all advice is welcome.

With a secret nailer you can only nail in the tongue not midway through a board. So your restricted on that axisI'm confused about the axis thing, can you explain further?

Depending on which way you lay/existing joists it might pose an issue

I went to lay out some planks to see what it looks like and found this! FFS!
It's fecking miles off! This batch has planks varying from 122mm to 126mm wide,
I'm onto Wickes at the moment about this BUT we bought the flooring about 14 months ago as it was on offer at the time so they're being arsy about it. It's nearly 3 grands worth of timber!
It's a clear manufacturing fault and no way am I accepting this and fitting it after all the hard work I've put in on my house.
