It's almost as if the last regular user laid it up when he knew everything that moved was about to die.

Just as I was retuning from a very nice uneventful 20 mile tootle, 100yds from home there was an almighty howl from, what I thought was the rear drive. Its been on the list to service as it leaks. I also wanted to make sure it wasn't going to carp itself.
Oh hindsight I smite thee.

So out it came, came out easy enough. There isnt any debris, nor ruff bearings. It’ll come as no surprise they are not cheap. All odd ball sizes.
the wormdrive rear double thrust is good, the front is smooth but the race is dull. I havent managed to get the main bronze gear assembly apart yet. It needs more heat, might pop it in the oven

Its not all roses, there’s side play on the wormwheel. There shouldn't be any.

Did I mention there’s 5.8mm of end float on the worm drive. I don't know what it should be, but Im pretty sure its less than that. Easy enough to fix.

Ridden any further it would trash the bronze wormwheel at £480.
(Would really like to meet the last guy who waved a spanner over it)

The unfortunate/fortunate thing with old bikes is that they tend to be only as bad/good as their last rebuild.

I was caught out by someone who came over as genuine, well kitted workshop and some nice bikes - the bike they sold me had rusty fork stanchions with new seals behind the tinware, carb of a 650 on a 350, magneto of a stationary engine and a rebuilt engine with a tight spot and oi pump incorrectly assembled. Bike sold on ebay partially rebuilt.

Rear drive almost fully striped. The Worm wheel is like new,(I’ve a receipt for a new one in 78) the deep ball thrust

bearings feel good. Thankfully they are 200 quid a set. The W/wheel is £584. Once set up it should give no trouble, contrary to mythology.

Rear drive has been cleaned and inspected. Just requires new shims as these look like the cat’s been at them.
4off 18thou total thickness, I’ll machine a replacement in one. Just waiting on a stud, and gaskets and lip seals.




A GKN uj kit comes Monday for the Hardy Spicer. Whoever rebuilt it got a roller laid flat in the bottom of the cup on one side and left out 3 on the other. Never mind it was nicely painted.

oh the irony. There was a fully rebuilt one for sale in a dealers. I was tempted to go look, but didnt want a shiny bike, or a polished turd.

To be fair to (myself) the bike, I would have gone through all this regardless. I’ve been bitten before believing someone’s abilities/statements, so would rather check it for myself, then if it goes wrong, its my fault.

So I could have paid a lot more for a seemingly good bike only to find the same problems. At least this way I know what I’ve got. And I’ve nowt else to do

Not done much in the couple of weeks (I pulled my back lifting it back in the frame) today has been the first I’ve not had to force myself in and do something, other than open a beer

Quick machine job, replacing the 4x 0.0045" shims


with one 0.0180" shim.

nothing special to be honest. Parting tool is 0.100" so touch off and advance the saddle 0.1180" lock off and part. Thinest I’ve turned is 2thou.

As for the bike, I’m not sure dropped the gearbox oil, and there’s no debris. Might have caught the bearing as it was just about to let go
