Thanks I'll try that later. I did think it would be strange to have passwords visible, my thinking was that admin may be able to enable that if it's a sole user of the machine. Anyway it's obviously not that.

OK so the password that @Hood suggested works for the first two levels of authority. So I can't see anywhere to change anything related to the encoders. What I did see is a help table with information about ballscrew thread pitches. The only options are 5000 PPR and 2500 PPR, would that affect the operation of the Z axis if the encoder is only 1000 PPR?

I would have thought there would be more options than that.
Usually you would have somewhere to input the amount of pulses per mm or per µm or something like that.
I can't seem to find much info on the parameters, mostly seems to be programming info I have seen.
One other thing to say is normally the numbers for the encoders will be 4x the line count, so say a 2500 line encoder will actually be 10,000 pulses per rev of the encoder.

OK, the manuals don't really have much info regarding setting things up like that which is surprising as it's about 3" thick.

The encoder on the Y axis has different wiring than the Z, so can't swap that over to check unfortunately.

I've had a price for a new one from British Encoders, same type as the Y axis which is not far away from £200 deliverd.

You should be able to get one cheaper than that but maybe if it is going to basically be bolt on it would be worth the extra.
I know CSLAB sell one but maybe by the time post and VAT is added on it wouldn't be worth it.

Scott have you tried stripping the encoder down? It might be just a dry joint. If It IS the diode that's at fault I will gladly strip one of mind down to see if it has a compatible part.

Also you say the wiring is different, surely can't be that much different as you will just have 5 wires, 5v, 0v, A, B and Z. Unless the Y encoder is differential then in that case you would have 3 more wires.

Yes there's a few more wires there and it's connected directly into the back of the controller, where as the Z axis one goes through that line driver.

Thanks Pete, I haven't yet pulled the encoder apart but I am going to, it's not readily accessible so I'll have to pull the motor etc out of the column to get to it.

Ok, that is likely because it is differential so no need for the line driver, all the better for that.
You will have 5v, 0v, A+, A-, B+, B-, Z+ AND Z-.

OK thanks for the explanation, I will get the encoder out of the motor, maybe later on or tomorrow and get it pulled apart to see what's going on.

Another idea , if there is any means to fit a glass scale to the axes it may be a cheaper option.

I'd have to have a good look at that, certainly if it's possible it would be right in the firing line for chips and coolant.

I found this in a manual for a GSK 983MA control, not sure if yours is the same.
I don't fully understand it but it seems that you can set a ratio in the parameters that corresponds to the ballscrew pitch, the ratio and encoder used, they are using a 2500 in this example.

I can't find the settings anywhere. Maybe I need to log in as administrator?

Have you tried contacting them (GSK) to see if there's a way to reset the admin password. Very often there's a link that can be removed to clear NVRAM.
