Linseed oil for it's final finish. I will also make a new Taylor chuck badge.
They are capable of far greater clamling forces and stay accurate longer. Can't fathom these chucks. No perpendicular surface to set work too.
Regularly use parallels to set work away from the chuck body but don't have the option with these.
I would love to find the four jaw Taylor but these are impossible to find. But I shall not give up.They are capable of far greater clamling forces and stay accurate longer.
But like you said a pita.
Id like a 20" one for my big lang
Damn handy on production work on square stockProbably the least practicable type of chuck as far as I'm concerned. It has neither the versatility of the independent 4-jaw nor the tolerance for handling out-of-round stock of the self-centering 3-jaw.
I agree .It's strange that the four jaw is self centering and not independentProbably the least practicable type of chuck as far as I'm concerned. It has neither the versatility of the independent 4-jaw nor the tolerance for handling out-of-round stock of the self-centering 3-jaw.

What sizeI've got one of those kicking about in the shed. Are they collectible/valuable then?
Nice restoration, is it worth my while to do the same do you think?
They are not worth big money. They are just getting harder to get. Just another part of old British engineeringI've got one of those kicking about in the shed. Are they collectible/valuable then?

I load my lathes with a crane so no work will fit in a collet!Yes, very handy for that. Not saying I wouldn't have one but I wouldn't go and buy one. If I had to run a lot of square stock I'd turn up a split collet with a step to stop it pulling through the jaws when the bar is fed.
That sounds a bit of a odd request!!Screwdriver. Get down the shed and measure.

Pm sentIt's a lot bigger than I remember!
8 1/2 inches (err, ish)
Backplate looks like a recent addition.
Its is quite possible I have a smaller one somewhere
Acquired a few hex and square collets with my last acquisition. Sure il find a use down the line.I load my lathes with a crane so no work will fit in a collet!
On a serious note I have a load of ward capstan collets with a number being hex and square. Maybe I ll have the machine to go with them one day
