    Evening guys .
Thought I would share the strip down and rebuild of a 8.5 inch Taylor lathe chuck . This is my second Taylor chuck .My other chuck being 5.5 inches and came with both sets of jaws. Unfortunately the 8.5 only came with the internal jaws. I will be serching for the other set. Taylor lathe chucks came in sizes from 4.5 inches up to 20 inches diameter. As you can see from the pictures below the chuck is great condition despite being full of swarf. It's had a light collision with a lathe tool but nothing serious. I also have a 10 page document showing all Taylor lathe chucks and accessories. 15405746522503629926971029313242.jpg 20181026_140612.jpg 20181026_140904.jpg 20181026_141919.jpg 20181026_141926.jpg 20181026_141934.jpg 20181026_142208.jpg 20181026_142212.jpg 20181026_142641.jpg 20181026_142654.jpg

Looks in about normal condition for a stripped 3-jaw. No obvious nasties in there.

Do you have the outside jaws?

The chuck cases have cleaned up nice. All rust has been removed. Will give them a good sort out tomorrow. Jaws are in great condition. 20181026_173844.jpg 20181026_165435.jpg 20181026_164526.jpg

Always the way. I have two virtually brand new chucks missing the outside jaws. One set is not available the other is £25 more for the O/S jaws than I paid for the chuck.

Yes mate. I will try and locate a set. I had a result with my other Taylor as it has both sets.

Can't fathom these chucks. No perpendicular surface to set work too.

Regularly use parallels to set work away from the chuck body but don't have the option with these.

In some of @spencer 427's pics, the part near the hole looks as if it could be? :dontknow:

Your correct. These are dished and you can't square off. I will have a selection of three and four jaws for it. They are very unusual chucks.

My Taylor chuck is now complete. Pictures below are it's assembly. Straight forward enough. All moving parts are checked for movement and any problems are sorted. Everything is cleaned a couple of times and oiled. I use way oil for assembly as it's all I got until I find an alternative and it's better than grease. The chuck will not be used for a while as I need to make a backplate and finish the lathe refurbishing. I have new backplate bolts on order. The chuck is really nice now and very smooth in its operations. Taylor chucks were considered the best in there time but they did have a few problems. One problem is they are very heavy indeed and not recommend for small lathes. They are not everyone's cup of tea but I love them. 20181029_101223.jpg 20181029_111758.jpg 20181029_112818.jpg 20181029_115621.jpg 20181029_120111.jpg 20181029_120414.jpg 20181029_120625.jpg 20181029_121506.jpg 20181029_121552.jpg

What's the finish you put on, oil or wax or something else?
