aprillia rs 50 rebuild

Just stripped down my lads moped ,1998 rs 50,need to order some replacement bearings,on splitting the crank case i was suprised there was no gasket,any recommendation on re-assembly use a sealant or not?.......also the seals, nitrile or viton,looks like ebayer's are supplying nitrile as viton is x7 as expensive,and lastly the bearings normally use skf or fag at work ,ebay sellers are offering koyo like the are better any views?and lastly etn9 low friction fibreglass cages would thes be worth any extra expense,will they last as long?......i will be checking numbers as i strip them out just wondering if there are superior parts that can or should be fitted to try and keep the bike reliable for another 12months........cheers Gav

Seal the crank case halves with stuff called '3 bond'. This is designed for this purpose and you can buy it from

Bearings Koyo are one of the quality makes, don't buy any of the unbranded ones on there. I'm sure you know to buy from a bearing dealer buy size then a motorcycle dealer by model.

Seals, again from quality dealer or genuine parts. Messing about with 2 stroke crank case seals isn't worth the aggro.

Thanks Aero , bearing so far are skf and c3 clearance,look like viton seals as they are brown,i wonder if skf are original?appear to be made in france.....may have been rebuilt before.......its an old ped with 36k on clock ......i'm still pulling bearing bearings out today ,and am wondering which replacements to order koyo,skf,fag?any views welcome..........Gav.......

I have had problems with Koyo before but that was a wheel bearing, C3 is a finer tolerance bearing so dont think there should be a problem if ordering C3 which ever bearing you purchase.
Buy from a bearing supplier not a bike shop (I prefer to be kissed when getting shafted). You will probably get the seals there as well you will need the od/ id and width also if a single lip or double.

You old romantic you..............thanks for the input Sam......got all but 2 out ,no rear access to them ,can't find my slide hammer.....may have taken to work.....one a pressed steel needle race which being mounted in alluminium i'm not sure i fancy trying to fold it in on itself ,may end up using heat or tig to help,will attempt when i've warmed up tomorrow.......thanks again Gav

Its possible its been rebuilt before. All the big manufacturers use either SKF, Koyo, FAG NKE. In fact the only things you won't find is cheap made in India stuff....erm unless you own an Indian Enfield.

I just ordered a complete set of wheel bearings and the odd sized oil seals that go in the hubs from these people. Very good suppliers I was impressed by their range of seals.

They have viton seals as well

And definately heat it up when you put the bearings in. Thrashing them in and out cold can lead to the fit being comprimised and the bearing spinning in its housing.

Just had a look at that three bond looks like the sealant you need used to use suzukibond it stays where you put it crankcase pressure is important on a twosmoke so a good seal is important.

Suzukibond is about the most expensive incarnation of that threebond stuff. They really take the mickey. Yamabond is cheaper AFAIK. Personally I use Permatex ultracopper spray-a-gasket for joining case halves. Takes a bit of masking but you get a great cover and no squeeze-out.

p.s. the RS50 engine was used to break the world 50cc landspeed record last year. The buddfab streamliner went out of the timed course at Bonneville at 150mph - there's a video on youtube

Theres loads of fancy selants out there, but if the truth be known anything will work. Even that awful blue Hylomar. In 20 years of building engines I've seen everything from grease to PVA decorators sealant used on gasket faces (by customers - not me I hasten to add)

We all have our favourates but 3 bond for metal to metal joints and wellseal on paper gaskets (excellent at sealing old Jap 4 pot base gaskets) works well for me.

If you cant get 3 bond a smear of silicon works well on two stroke crank cases.

I will have a look around the shop ,as i have a few different products, hermatite,universal blue ,permabond,probably got silicone and blue hylomar as well ...i'll post my findings later see if any are suitable before shelling out my hard earned then ..........Cheers gav

I have seen all makes of bearings used over the years (who can supply 100,000 bearings at the right price at the right time, for the bike manufacturer !! ),the same goes for seals and sealer, some engines use a gasket for the crank case halves, some use a sealer, i have striped engines with so little sealer you would think it was built dry , i would go for middle priced parts, cheep parts are cheep for a reason! dear parts are sometimes, middle priced parts marked up, what ever you use just keep it clean and build it in a dust free place, small high reving 2-strokes go bang,sometimes it's just your luck. best of luck

There must be very few horizontally-split cases on bikes that are sealed with gaskets - I've yet to see one. Certainly, any case split across a shell-bearing would have no gasket.
I guess some vertically-split cases might have gaskets, though it could play havoc with shaft end-float in the engine/box.
