I think everyone is forgetting that Cossies were only ever any good, right at the time, compared to everything else at the time, for the money. I mean, you had to compare them to a BMW M3 or something expensive.
In standard spec (escos, sapph, 4x4 etc) they have aged terribly. Horrible, floppy, unpredictable handling, boring interiors, ford "quality"... no thanks. See above video...
At least the likes of 106 GTis, minis etc were chuckable and still fun today, although the interiors and creature comforts are obviously old fashioned.
The car that captivated me was my Nissan 200sx, S14, I went from a 2005 530d to this 1995 blandmobile... and it was SOOO much fun But ultimately, after I finished modifying EVERYTHING about it, it still didn't have the comfort or effortless power of a modern car... and almost blander inside than an escort, if that's possible!
Since then, I've never looked back.
Try driving a new Golf GTi and an Escos back to back and tell me I'm wrong. Could you honestly say you'd spend the same money on them (assuming as-new prices etc) and live with the old car for 3 years?
The cosworth would still take pride of place over any new super car every day of the week
My cosworth running 520bhp or even in standard trim would eat your Datsun for breakfast and be ten times more reliable and out handle it
The only thing the Datsun would beat it at is rusting quicker
