mate ime sitting here wishing you were closer...very frustrating when you can see a fish out the water,ide love to give you a weekend on stuff thats just run of the mill in my world...iff you would like a chat over stuff your doing then PM me your number and let me know when i could call you..sometimes even not knowing the proper name for stuff you need can multiply the hardship ten fold.

It's even worse when my son works for jewsons. (To be fair he is tool hire supervisor and does not have a background in building ( other than what I have taught him... ( poor kid)

In general I go for belt and braces approach even if it cost me more. I was worried about needing pillars but was going to add some structural steel while I was adding concrete floor and steel benches.

Problem is my short term memory is shot and I could speak to you tonight and remember nothing about it till 2 weeks time.

Biggest issue is I an sure 90 degree wall plate fastenings and those twisted joist straps would be fine. BUT I can't move on when I have something in my head I want...lol

I am imagining a standard 90 degree wall plate fastener with two wings or ears like what Wendelspanswick described BUT his photo did not fit my minds eye......

sometimes called a bat strap or truss clip shown upside down in the pic on the link

use the L shaped brackets to hold down the wall plate
and the truss clip to hold the roof beams to the wall plate (or just a couple of 4" nails spiked in from either side)

Roof plate straps and truss brackets are 2 separate things.
The roof plate straps hold the roof plate to the top of the wall, in windy weather it stops Uplift ripping the whole roof off. You want one every 2 meters.
The truss brackets then hold the rafters to the roof plate, the ones in you picture are fine and it's these that you need to put a nail in every hole, for the same reason, to stop Uplift ripping the roof off.

It seems like everyone is using different names to describe the same things!

this is the only pic I could find that shows both a restraint strap which holds the wall plate in place on top of the wall and a truss clip which holds the rafter in place on top of the wall plate.
hope this makes it a bit clearer

Well not only that but it seems you can use different items to achieve the same result.

This confused me as it made sense that they exist but I can not find any. Lol

(Use the lower holes on the truss bracket to attach it to the inside vertical face of the roof plate with the two wings sticking up, the truss or rafter sits on the roof plate inside the wings.)

It's also strange that not many pics exist if "that" (whatever it may be) is the best way of doing it. Lol

with a felt roof id advise to silver paint it as it protects it more from the sun we use it for dormer roofs as they last a lot longer than just torch on felt or green mineral felt


as goes for the wall plate wood its just drill through and screw it the truss plate is not needed if you nail the truss to the wall plate as we use a nail gun to fire in the nails instead of the old hammer job

as goes for the roof im using the box profile roofing but ive got the problem of dripping water so to combat that im changing it to this soon

what you are doing is creating a cold part under the tin roof where the water can run off that drips down you can also use a reflective bubble roll under the rafters to reflect heat back into the building

lay your felt onto the rafters then wood up in lengths up your rafter using laths then another laths is used across this level

as you create a run off of any drips from the metal roofing we use this method for slates and concrete roofing tiles you can of coarse dual the felt making a much better run off of water on your roof

at the wall plate im using kingspan myself but once in a little im swapping to normal insulation as i get it free anyway

ive just installed this on a property and first go of it as well best thing all done with rollers and a brush



its the grp roofing with 2 coats of 900gsm fibre glass and then resin

so easy to install but you have to watch the heat and the timing of the resin and catalyst the top coat is loverly to use its just paint with catalyst in it and roll it on

its this stuff

and id rather have 30 years + of no leaks

Been thinking about roof as I am baby sitting and cant get on with bolts or shed (and I could not go fishing

Anyway I have 6 x 2 rafters 4.5 metres long and as one of the guys on here suggested his lean to was the best thing he had built I thought about going for one.....but I cant find who said it...lol.. Also my son is convinced its not worth the extra roof material cost....



Mine would be a floating roof as I would just use the extra 1.5 metres of joist and not have the square wooden posts in the way.

Anyway my wife is also thinking there is no need for it... (as they do)

So can the one person who has an overhand please tell me why its so useful...lol

I think that might have been on the Show us Your Garage thread. The idea was for a wooden deck behind the shed with a covered area for the bbq. I think!

My roof will have a 6 inch void I can fill with insulation and then board inside to keep the heat in BUT I also have the opportunity to use 2 inch thick x 10 inches wide planks on top of (or underneath the 3/4 roofing sheets). Woud it be better to sandwich a thin insulation between the two wood layers or save my money for insulation under the roof between the joists??

i can tell you why

the overhang is handy as stops rain hitting as much against your door or wall of the entrance its the only place that i would do an overhang

id only go over by 1 metre not the 1.5 metres unless im using a post as you have the problem of the end been wiped up by the wind by the overhang the post helps to tie the end down

like ive said comes in handy if raining at least you can still work at the door way and have the door open with no rain coming in your door as ive done it on the back shed with just 2ft overhang

Problem is its quite high with the roof slope added to it. So depending on rain direction its not gonna stop a lot of rain. Its gonna need to be some wind to shift Twenty 6 x 2 joists to be fair though.

Yeah its only a little wider than the garage..lol

The important part is being able to work in it as the wooden shed was not save to weld and could not move the lathe in to it.
