do yourself a favour do your ceiling board 3x2s now while you have good access at the front internal and rear of it

makes it easier to screw the boards up at the edges

Is that ceiling boards, for easy installation?
I plan to shove mucho insulation up there when the time comes.
Current plot is to run a trim strip around the edge, top of the wall, to wedge the end of a large sheet into, while I wrestle with said large sheet and insulation, and screws etc. It’s all a learning curve, which is half the fun.

no if you use 3x2 you can insulate it over it and into the ends

and no dont shove it in you have 5x2s i think so 4" insulation is fine to use in there



mark you walls first where joists are in a good thick line so you can see it, nothing worse than chasing joists you havent marked up first

dont have to wressle with them put 2 of those 2" wood screwed into the wall spaced so its 1" below too tight you wont slot it in too slack and it will drop down too far on you
lift the board onto your head and slot it in while you go up the ladder

if you have spacers you can twist another 2 woods into place this holds the boards up so you can screw them up

easy when you know how

as goes for insulation it will hold up with 3-4" screws every 2-3ft

In addition to @gaz1's excellent advice above ^^, how about adding this 'prop' as a third hand in the equation?
It might help lessen the load on your tired back & shoulders. I think you can buy pro versions but simple to knock up a 'one-time' job. Skip to 2:30 in, then possibly after the bit concerning your situation I'd make the prop T shaped though, for fear or marking the board(s).

As long as it's longer than your ceiling height I'd imagine it's got to help.

Just thinking aloud here , but wouldn't the membrane be better round the inside of the window aperture as well, prior to the windows going in?

I thought about that, but I’ve had to screw the window in through the wood framing, as I can’t get the glass out to do it the normal way, so the membrane would have stopped me doing that. Membrane will be stapled to the wood edge all the way round, it is set in 3/4”, and a UPVC lip glued/tacked over it to neaten it all up and cover the edges of the shiplap.

Or that’s the plan. I will see how things metamorphose as I progress.

Another good idea, I think I’ll be using plywood, 12mm or something near.

I got one of these when I redid the house a few years ago, best money I ever spent, surprising how often it's come in handy since then too.

That does looks pretty useful. I was planning on getting some clamps like that, with the quick action clamp thing. Nothing worse than trying to hold something in place while I tighten my old metal G clamp on it.

I didn’t put half as many screws in the roof boarding as I planned. Rain stopped play and next time I went up there was to lay the membrane. Probably got a dozen 2” screws in each board at most, round the edges. When I come to do the felt I shall belt a bunch of nails in through the membrane.

All mine are around the edge, so I shall put a few more in down the centre when I get chance. It is probably safe enough as it is, but you never know what weird weather might strike in the future.

All four sides now insulated and membraned.
Just had a reminder from Wickes, I have five rolls of loft insulation coming Tuesday. I was sure I ordered one, just to see what it was like, but messed up the delivery date.....by two weeks....

I guess the ceiling is going to be well insulated now then.

And the rest can go in the front garage roof, I doubt there is anything in that.

I also have to re-do the edges of the roof, as I screwed a 2x4 all the way round, but too low, so I shall raise it up a touch above deck height to make a sort of raised ledge around it, when the felt is put on there.

I went out to start modifying the edges of the roof this morning, unstapled the membrane on three sides...took down one of the edging strips 2 x 4's, starting trimming some wood off......power saw...on the roof......and it started to pour down with rain!

Last time I looked at a forecast we were in for a week of hot dry weather.
