My mistake. Enlarging that photo, I can now see it's missing.

Thanks Matt, I can see the problem now. I doubt finding another quick release mechanism for it will be likely though...
I always remember it working, but I'm pretty sure it never had the QR mechanism cos you always had to unwind it to release the work piece from the jaws. When I unbolted it from the bench that nut fell out, so it must have been some sort of bodge. If I can get it working even as described above I'd be happy... back to the drawing board!

I bodged a Samsonia, with all of the mechanism, but a broken tensioning spring, by placing a strong coil spring between the bottom of the nut and the bench.
It worked really well, but I must get around to making a new spring one day, if I can find a decent length of No.13 piano wire (about 1.5m by my calculation)
