We have one on an old discovery that's diesel fired, that has a timer which can be pre set, it fires up and has a circulating pump that heats the water in the matrix/engine block. Very effective stand alone system that you dont need to turn on, just go out there to a warm car, must be better for an engine thats doing short journeys.

Be better having 2 eggs a day instead...start van,put demister on and go back inside and enjoy 2 soft boiled eggs and a cuppa. Come back outside and drive away

I'm reasonably sure it is contrary to the Highway Code to leave an unattended vehicle idling or even to leave a parked vehicle idling.
Not sure if it is an offence to leave an unattended vehicle idling.
My Jaguar has that feature and can be initiated from the app on my telephone; it is enabled for the North American market vehicles but disabled for the UK and some other markets. The app has a warning flag stating the feature may not be available in your jurisdiction. Maybe that is a recent update?
No2 son has a remote heater for has NA MX-5, which lives outside. A mains fan heater with a plug he can control from his phone. He switches the heater on when he gets up and the cabin is warm and dry by the time he needs the car.

maybe I've missed somthing, I've had 5 of these peugeots vans now, all of them had a defrost button that automatically started the ac as well as the fan. AC is not only there for temperature control, it also dehumifies, (takes the mositure out of the air), and removes the moisture on the inside of the screen rapidly, ie less than a minute in mine. (which reminds me I need to regas the system)
if it's outside frost, cold water off the tap, removes frost fine, won't crack the screen, don't need hot water.

ha ha like they will be around at 5am to enforce that in every neighbourhood!
maybe more so in towns and high streets but at 5am on your own driveway I really cant see that happening.

so the carbon emissions must be diffrent on your own property

I know somebody who got done for it, for leaving his car running while he popped in to the newsagent for his daily paper.
We do suspect he got lippy with the policeman though, so probably a case of the policeman proving a point.

I cheated when I needed to replace a worn out fan motor - a couple of hacksaw cuts at each end of the inlet filter, carefully break out the glued in deflector plate and cut down to the case join - rmeove clips and remove only front third of the heater casing
Pretty much invisible when reassembled unless you knew.Took me ten years to work out the water control disc in the inlet valve on the current integrale was seized and not rotating with the operating lever - I'd been blaming the crap heater hot performance on the un-used air con heat exchanger left in the casing when I removed the rest of the air con. Removed that and still had crap heat . . .
New valve from UK specialist was stupid money . . . new old stock heat exhanger complete with valve, shipped form Italy was a fraction of the price . . . so if anyone wants a brand new unused Lancia Delta heater heat exchanger, with no inlet valve . . .
Is idling illegal?
Leaving an engine idling is an offence under Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. The Act enforces rule 123 of the Highway Code, which states, “You must not leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary on a public road.”Section 98 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986/1078 requires a driver to stop the engine of a vehicle when it is stationary so far as is necessary to prevent noise or exhaust emissions, unless the vehicle is stationary because of traffic. Section 107 of the same regulations prohibits a person from leaving a vehicle unattended unless the engine is stopped.
If drivers are breach for reasons outside those stated above, is is consideredan offence under section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 which can be punished by a fine of £2,500 if the vehicle is a goods vehicle or adapted to carry more than 8 passengers, or £1,000 otherwise (see Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988 section 33 and Part I of Schedule 2 to that act).

Its not often I get to say this, my Landrover Defender has an excellent heated windscreen, demists quicker than any other car I have had.
When I ran a 1930's Morris 8 I used to rub a cut potato on the inside of the windows to stop them misting, today you get all sorts of antifog treatments for inside motorcycle visors, they may help.
