Who is allowed to move this smart meter box

generaly if its the main cutout fuse seal broken the meter reader reports it if he can be bothered and they send someone out to replace it if there not very busy

Do meter readers actually still exist? Or are they a thing of imagination now, like TV detector vans and policemen.

We've lived here for 10 years and still have dumb meters and I've never seen a meter reader in all that time.

I just read the meters and update the thing when they ask, and they all seem to be happy with that. (and both meters are inside so they can't read them without coming inside).

I'll get back to this job soon, the existing garage CU is fed from the main house CU with 4mm twin and earth. I plan to change that for 10mm SWA. Is the following an acceptable plan.

That looks about how my holiday cottage charging point is done. Though if you going to the trouble of T ing at the Tails you might as well fit an isolator up stream too.

I would install a supply isolator before the ISCO blocks as a matter of course these days, something like the wylex REC2S.

But yes that looks fine assuming the 10mm is adequate for 60A in your particular installation.

if its fastened to a wooden board cut round it and refix above they have contact switches in the meter covers to stop tampering

It was too tight to the wall to cut through the screws, so....

A splash of white emulsion and it will look fine.

Something similar happened at a place I was renovating - the old meter was on the left wall of the kitchen where a new tall cupboard needed to go.
The meter was secured to a wooden board, as luck would have it the nails holding the board onto the wall came loose when we were getting ready to replaster the wall
It was then an easy job to mount the meter to the back wall when the plastering was done and make a cutout in the back of the new kitchen unit before sliding it into place.

No interruption to service so no need to break any seals

Did a bit of measuring out and the space is not ideal.

I would like it like this but there would be no way to get the SWA cable into the bottom of the fused switch.

Alternatively I could do it with the fused switch on the side wall, but will look ugly. Any thoughts?

Could you get a smaller isolator, I tend to use the proteus double pole switch in one of these enclosures.

I would also add a service block for the earth's. And could you not shunt the switch fuse over to the right a tad on the back wall so the SWA can come up the right hand side of the consumer unit, or have I missed an earlier post?

The fused switches I've been looking at which would accept a SWA cable seem to have the access towards the left of the bottom of the case, which makes access pretty much impossible in my original plan.

An alternative could be one like this, and then a separate box to connect to the SWA to but that means yet another box

Actually, this one could be OK, if I put it right over to the right and get the SWA access on the right at the base.

Yep I'd go with this one, they are well made and have plenty of room to sweep the cables round nicely!

Did a bit more this morning, I bought some "flex" tails, glad I did, it was still a tricky job with the 25mm core.

The sparky was due to come round last week for a look, I'd asked him if he could put the meter tails into the isolator switch. I'm not sure if he intended pulling the fuse, doing it live or say "get the dno to pull the fuse".

Anyway he's not turned up yet, if he is still a no show by the end of the week I'll do it myself live.

Just pull the fuse, who is to say when it happened and who did it?

Just pull the fuse. The DNO really don't care, and would generally prefer you don't work live.

It’s also worth removing the meter cover and double checking they're tight after you’ve manipulated the tails into the isolator, it’s surprising how little movement it takes to work them loose.

yea it is but the meter cover has a tamper ,switch behind it and signals its been interfered with

The sparky just visited, looked at my work and said, just pull the fuse and do it yourself, had a cuppa and refused beer money.
