My 30 year old Peugeot diesel has done 281,000 miles, zero rebuilds; just routine servicing.

Although its old, its not old old.I'd bet being an old peugeot its had plenty of suspension parts replaced.It is of the age that cars were being more reliable with less work needing doing to them, late 80's onwards.
I've got a 2009 suzuki, coming up for 130k on it and apart from a gearbox rebearing(common fault), exhaust, battery and door lock nothing has needed doing apart from servicing, might get the strut tops done as a little play in them but still an mot pass.

But it's the manufacturers fault for creating expectation that a fault logged in the ECU will actually give you a clue what's gone wrong.

It rarely does.
I have a passat that drove like a dog when we had it. Fixed that with a fair few bushes and a bearing or 2 but it keeps telling me I need a service despite it having oil, oil filter brake pads and new discs fitted.

It also does however tell me there is a vehicle fault with bleeping and glowplug light illuminating . Strange thing the vehicle codes come back to throttle body and a modification they say to fit ,as it wears and goes back to far, does not solve it.
Plus it also starts and runs fine in the summer.
But when it gets colder it starts and stops sometimes....Once twice 3 times occasionally 4 but all ways runs perfect after that..

I keep thinking glow plugs maybe but as they are hard to undo and get out I feel like not taking the risk. Lol

Does not make it right for a gearbox to fail on a ten plus year old car with sensible mileage.

Not right but as a whole the car is multiple times better than a car from before the 90's with total repair costs so much lower and totaly reliable.
I remember my mini whose brakes needed constant attention, cut out when wet,gearbox synchros worn out and had inches of water in the footwells if it rained.Or my dads escort van which would never start if the engine wasn't covered with a blanket when cold.The ford anglia whose clutch exploded in the middle of a roundabout.My beetle which jumped out of gear.With all these cars I had the fear of not starting a journey or not getting to the end of it, the suzuki I know I could jump into it drive a 1000 miles with no problem at all.

Yes that's why I have not replaced glowpugs. It starts fine....but just stops immediately. Never does it in the summer. With the temps ee have now its fine...but I bet it does it during the week.

Live data on vag com seems to indicate throttle body.

Sister in law bought a new Suzuki Ignis and drove it for about 13 years. Totally neglected it, didn't service it. Things got fixed only when they broke, brake pads when the metal hit the discs. Asked her when it last had an oil change, the reply was "never but I had to put some oil into it once or twice"
After it failed it was replaced with a £500 Nissan Tino. She's had it 2 years now, just mot'd with zero faults, and naturally not serviced either.
I always ask myself, why am I wasting money looking after my cars? It appears you don't actually need to at all

other side of the argument , you used to do valves on a fort x flow at 40k , and bore them and do pistons rings and bearings at 80k ,,, very rare you got 120k out of one at all , so there really is two sides to the thing.

But, it was an quick and easy job , to take a cylinder head off a lot of modern cars is a major job.
I worked with a guy that had a 1600;x flow in a Mk 3 Cortina who was going on holiday to Cornwell , at least a 600 mile round trip , he was checking the car over on the Friday lunchtime and found a major problem, The engine was out , stripped and on its way to our local engine machine shop by 2 pm , at 5pm it was back in our workshop having been reboored , new cam ,bearings and followers , crank reground with new bearings etc new valve guides, re-cut seats and new valves etc with everything cleaned . At 7pm it was rebuilt, run up to temperature and the head retorqued ready for his trip. How many modern vehicles would that be possible on?
