I remember my dad telling me he had a spare engine for his ford van in the 50's. When the running engine needed work he would swap the engine then overhaul the removed one and leave it in the garage ready for the next time.
Was common practice with ford sidevalves as they had white metal big ends cast directly into the rods. You got about 20,000 miles out of them, so a spare was kept and swapped in while the previous had them 're metaled.
I think the 100e range was when they changed to replaceable shells. I imagine his van was of the previous sit up and beg type.
