When I were a lad in the mid Seventies, before I got my apprenticeship, I had a couple of fill in jobs, one of which was in a factory. I'm sure a lot of you will have been sent off to get the Long Stand, Tartan paint, Box of assorted clearances, Metric adjustable spanners, etc.
A new school leaver was sent round to the assembly shop (exclusively wimmin then) to see Doris (cant remember her name) to ask for a pair of greased nuts.
He got them. Luckily I had avoided this, by being forewarned by my friends sister who worked there. Anyway, poor guy was, apart from being greasy, vey embarrassed, but he got over it.
Nowadays this would be serious abuse and would probably end in sackings and a court case.
We made a magic trick in metal work. Teacher had done the same as yours. When I was in Junior High School (grade 7), the teacher in my metal shop class made a button collet for the lathe, so the students could machine off half the thickness of a Penny. Two headed or two tailed coins could then be made by soldering the pieces together. Looking back in retrospect, Mr. Smith could have been in big legal trouble for the defacing of coins; as kids, we didn't know any better.
