Oh yes, definitely Indian. Our welding lecturer in college smoked roll ups made with baccy called Hippo. Never seen it before or since. It was black and would stun a horse. I swear it was supposed to be pipe tobacco!

Anyone recall the Turkish fags that used to be around, we all reckoned it was camel cr@p & tram tickets judging by the smell. If we saw anyone smoking it we used to say “I hope you have a much fun smoking it as the camel had getting rid of it”

A fitter at the foundry couldn't taste Park Drive, Capstan etc. so he used to hand roll St. Julien pipe tobacco.

Odd.
I worked at a local TV & radio station in the mid 1980's and allot of the staff smoked pipe.
Butterscotch seemed to be the tobacco of choice (they all chipped in and made a bulk buy).
It never made me cough, and wasn't un-pleasant in any way (me being a non smoker),
no watering eyes, nothing.
My favorite uncle smoked a corncob pipe filled with "Half and Half", and I see they used to
sell it as cigarettes as well.
However, today's cigarettes are terrible, and I can't stand being around any of it.
Maybe the "recipe" has changed ?

Buying single park drive was a luxury for some.

When I were a lad the local post office had a cast iron vending machine outside which sold packs of ten for 10p but dinner money was only 25p so all you could afford was chips and beans for dinner . but on the bus on the way home you could sell singles for 5p winner winner money spinner , then they took the machine away

All us kids were terrified of her.
She would sell woodbines singly to the older boys.
I was told by an older friend that in his day these were often used as currency at the top of the hill where a lady known as Peg the pro lived in a caravan in a patch of woodland. Allegedly two woodbines were enough to get you a shag!
Some would wait until she was entertaining a client then hurl clods of mud at the caravan wherupon she would issue forth swearing mightily.

Tried a pipe for a year or two used a mixture of Balkan Sobranie and Empire Latakia. I could be mistaken but it was 60 years ago. Still got the pipes one of which is a Manx Meerschaum.

Sort of a fruity burning roofing tar smell....
I asked him one day if he was smoking a "Fruit Rollup" and did he forget to remove the wrapper ?...
