Just seen a myford localish
I was told to stay clearI have been thinking on the Clarke with mill attached but just don't know...........
What ever you chose, consider getting a lathe with change gears or a gearbox to allow for thread cutting. Realistically, a lathe is only half a lathe without this feature.
because a lot of lathes haven't got a gearbox for thread cutting so you have to change the feed rate with the change wheelsI see a few with sets of change gears...... How and why please?
Some background on http://www.lathes.co.uk/latheparts/page6.html basically the gearing varies the driven speed of the feedshaft that can be engaged to drive the carriage - this will give you the movement of the carriage per revolution of the chuck which is the feed rate or thread pitch if screw cutting. So to cut different pitches of threads you need selection of gears or a gearbox.I see a few with sets of change gears...... How and why please?

Was in the right place at the right time, chap even delivered it to my houseHope I get a donation like that....
So shall i wait and find a bigger and more durable lathe
It all depends what you have planned for it.
I didn’t really have any plans for a lathe but I was donated a Raglan Little John MK II. It was old and a bit tired but after some fettling and tinkering it works a treat.
Now that I have a lathe I can’t understand how I’ve managed for so long without one.
It is capable of cutting threads and I have all the gear but I can honestly say I’ve never had the need to cut threads in the three years I’d had the lathe
More experienced latheists probably know how to do more with a lathe than me
